  • Changes to autonomous motivation and reductions in amotivation led to positive mental health in overweight male football fans

Open Access•Øystein Røynesdal, Øystein Bue Røynesdal et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2026

OBJECTIVE: Do post-program motivational regulations mediate the intervention effect of the SDT-based European Fans in Training (EuroFIT) program on self-esteem, well-being and vitality at 12-months follow-up? METHODS: A causal mediation analysis of data from the randomised controlled trial of the EuroFIT program that recruited 1113 overweight, male football fans in England, Norway, Portugal and the Netherlands. RESULTS: <.001), but not controlled…

  • Changes to men’s walking and the contribution of walking to self-reported physical activity in the EuroFIT programme

Open Access•Øystein Røynesdal, Eivind Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2025

Objective: Gender-sensitive approaches to increasing men’s physical activity (PA) through sports settings have shown promise across cultural contexts. We examined changes to men’s walking and the contribution of walking towards self-reported PA after participating in the men-only European Fans in Training (EuroFIT) programme before exploring men’s experiences of sustaining walking to explain the quantitative findings. Design: A sequential mixed-m…

  • Effects of a lifestyle programme on accelerometer-measured physical activity level and sedentary time on overweight and obese women of Somali background living in Norway

Open Access•Eivind Andersen, Linn Bøhler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

    clinicaltrials.gov NCT04578067, registered May 2021

  • A controlled weight loss intervention study among women of Somali background in Norway

Open Access•Linn Bøhler, Helmut E Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2024•References: 1

This culturally tailored intervention study demonstrated a modest non-significant effect on weight change after 12 months, possibly due to the short intervention duration and COVID-19. Further studies of a longer duration and considering the provision of childcare are needed to understand whether this approach can be transferred to other immigrant groups and genders.Trial registration: The study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov NCT04578067, 2…

  • Alterations in inflammatory markers after a 12-week exercise program in individuals with schizophrenia—a randomized controlled trial

Open Access•Therese Torgersen Bigseth, John Abel Engh et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

In our study, HIIT and AVG for 12-weeks had no reducing effect on inflammatory markers. Patients with high baseline IL-6 levels had a positive change in CRF during intervention. In order to increase our knowledge regarding association between inflammatory markers and exercise in individuals with schizophrenia, larger studies with more frequent and longer exercise bout duration are warranted

  • How European Fans in Training (EuroFIT), a lifestyle change program for men delivered in football clubs, achieved its effect

Open Access•Christopher Bunn, Victoria Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

    ISRCTN81935608, registered 16/06/2015

  • High-intensity interval training may reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia, putatively through improved VO2max

Open Access•Gry Bang-Kittilsen, John Abel Engh et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

    [www.ClinicalTrials.gov], identifier [NCT02205684]

  • Developing a risk score for undiagnosed prediabetes or type 2 diabetes among Saharawi refugees in Algeria

Open Access•Sigrun Henjum, Victoria Telle Hjellset et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The risk score developed is a helpful tool to decide who should be screened for prediabetes or T2D by blood sample analysis. The performance of the risk score was adequate based on internal validation with bootstrap analyses, but should be confirmed in external validation studies

  • Insufficient physical activity level among Sahrawi adults living in a protracted refugee setting

Open Access•Eivind Andersen, Ida Kjellså et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Almost half of the participants were categorised as insufficiently physically active, however, most of the Sahrawi refugees express a positive attitude towards PA. PA is a low-cost approach to reducing deaths and NCDs, government initiatives to increase PA levels in refugee camps are advised

  • Retracted Article

Open Access•Eivind Andersen, Steinar Øvreås et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The trial was retrospectively registered on September 19, 2020 and available online at ClinicalTrials.gov: No. NCT04555746

Open Access•Tom Langerud Holmen, Jens Egeland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Objective: We investigated whether levels of current physical activity (PA) contribute to the established relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and cognition in schizophrenia and whether brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) or its precursor proBDNF mediates this relationship. Method: Sixty-one outpatients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders participated. Neurocognition was assessed with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (…

Open Access•John Abel Engh, Jens Egeland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

People with schizophrenia often have an unhealthy sedentary lifestyle with low level of physical activity and poor cardiorespiratory fitness - an important predictor of cardiovascular disease. We investigated the relations between cardiorespiratory fitness and both sedentary time and different aspects of physical activity, such as daily steps, light intensity physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Using accelerometer as an…

  • Intervention Effects on Physical Activity and Insulin Levels in Men of Pakistani Origin Living in Oslo

Open Access•Eivind Andersen, Arne T Høstmark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2012

High prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is seen in some immigrant groups in Western countries, particularly in those from the Indian subcontinent. Our aims were to increase the physical activity (PA) level in a group of Pakistani immigrant men, and to see whether any increase was associated with reduced serum glucose and insulin concentrations. The intervention was developed in collaboration with the Pakistani community. It used a social cogniti…

  • Effect of a Physical Activity Intervention on the Metabolic Syndrome in Pakistani Immigrant Men

Open Access•Eivind Andersen, Arne T Høstmark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2012

Physical activity (PA) is thought to prevent the metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is prevalent among south Asian immigrants in Western countries. The purpose of this study was to explore whether increasing PA improves the MetS and associated components in a group of Pakistani immigrant men living in Norway. One- hundred and fifty physically inactive Pakistani immigrant men were randomized to either a control group (CG) or an intervention group (I…
