  • Entertaining Ginnie

Paul Brassley•ARTICLE•Historical Journal Of Film Radio…•2025

Recent studies of the context of cinema as cultural practice have, for the Second World War period, inevitably had to rely on memories for evidence, and have often concentrated on those of working-class cinemagoers. This study, however, interrogates a largely-unused archive of letters and diaries for contemporary evidence of the wartime entertainment experiences of a relatively wealthy American woman living in Britain. It analyses quantitative an…

  • Twentieth-Century Georgic and Agricultural Technology

    Open Access•Paul Brassley•CHAPTER•History of English Georgic Writing•2022

This chapter argues that the way in which authors of both fiction and non-fiction wrote how agriculture changed around the years of the Second World War. For the first fifty years of the century the extent and popularity of georgic writing was sufficient for the cultural significance of the countryside to outweigh its economic importance. However, those works that dealt seriously with farming tended to emphasise its problems, and mostly described…

JOAN THIRSK, THE DOYENNE OF BRITISH rural history, died on October 3, 2013. She was ninety-one. Joan’s record of research and writing lasted for more than sixty years, and she was important to British and continental European historians for several reasons. In her work on the early modern period, she demonstrated the use of a much wider range of documentation than had hitherto been employed to reveal local variations in farming and rural economie…

  • The Professionalisation of English Agriculture

    Open Access•Paul Brassley•ARTICLE•Rural History•2005•Cited by: 4

Following Perkin's suggestion that western European society is increasingly professionalised, and given the emergence of a stratum of large commercial farms in twentieth-century England, this paper examines the contention that, to some extent at least, English agriculture has been professionalised over the course of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It briefly surveys the literature on professionalisation, identifies a list of professi…

  • On the unrecognized significance of the ephemeral landscape

    Paul Brassley•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•1998•Cited by: 17•References: 16

This paper argues that the ephemeral components of the landscape have a significant, but hitherto unrecognized, effect upon the way in which it is perceived and evaluated. These ephemeral components, or landscape ephemera, are those which change with the weather, the seasons, the growth and decay of plants, the choice of farm crop, and so on. Their nature is explored, and they are contrasted with the more permanent components of the landscape, su…
