  • Mortality risk and burden associated with non-optimum temperatures in Puerto Rico

    Open Access•Fátima Díaz-Collado, Francisco Díaz-Collado et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The effects of a changing climate are already evident in Caribbean small island developing states (SIDS) like Puerto Rico, where heat episodes have become more frequent. Despite reports of increasing heat-related death rates, robust epidemiological evidence on the health impacts of high temperatures, as well as the effects of low temperatures, remains scarce, particularly outside of urban settlements in Caribbean SIDS. In this study, we conducted…

  • Strategies for Overcoming Challenges in Promoting a Socially-More Responsive Code of Building Information Modeling in Egypt

Open Access•Alsaied Doha, Nanes Mansour et al.•ARTICLE•International Society for the…•2024

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a potential solution to numerous challenges in asset management, including missing data, incompatible software, and unclear business processes. However, the current use of BIM in construction projects has focused on the application of technology and digital information delivery, neglecting system compatibility and information needs. This oversight can lead to a gap resulting in varying levels of implementati…

  • Association of exposure to extreme rainfall events with cause-specific mortality in North Carolina, US

Open Access•Kevin Chan, Jie Ban et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Extreme rainfall events could influence human health. However, the associations between extreme rainfall events and mortality remain rarely explored. Here, we conducted a time-series study using county-level mortality data in North Carolina during 2015–2018 to estimate the associations between extreme rainfall events and cause-specific mortality. We defined an extreme rainfall event as a day when a county’s daily total precipitation exceeded the …

  • Nationwide projections of heat- and cold-related mortality impacts under various climate change and population development scenarios in Switzerland

Open Access•Evan de Schrijver, Sidharth Sivaraj et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Climate change and progressive population development (i.e., ageing and changes in population size) are altering the temporal patterns of temperature-related mortality in Switzerland. However, limited evidence exists on how current trends in heat- and cold-related mortality would evolve in future decades under composite scenarios of global warming and population development. Moreover, the contribution of these drivers to future mortality impacts …

  • Climate change and health in Kuwait

    Open Access•Barrak Alahmad, Ana M Vicedo‐Cabrera et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

It is uncertain what climate change could bring to populations and countries in the hot desert environment of the Arabian Peninsula. Not only because they are already hot, countries in this region also have unique demographic profiles, with migrant populations potentially more vulnerable and constituting a large share of the population. In Kuwait, two-thirds of the population are migrant workers and record-high temperatures are already common. We…

  • The prestigious tin–lead horse fittings in the Warring States Period

Open Access•D Chen, Yaewon Han et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Tomb M25 of the Xijuan cemetery at Shouxian was identified as a Cai elite tomb dated to the fifth century bce . From this tomb, 182 metal items were unearthed, and two‐thirds of them were found made with Sn‐Pb alloy via portable X‐ray fluorescence (pXRF) and scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS) analyses. Lead isotope analysis (LIA) revealed that leaded bronze and Sn‐Pb alloy did not share the same source of l…

  • Impact of climate and population change on temperature-related mortality burden in Bavaria, Germany

Open Access•Masna Rai, Susanne Breitner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Background. Recent studies on temperature-related mortality burden generally found higher cold-related deaths than heat-related deaths. In the future, it is anticipated that global warming will, on one hand result in larger heat-related mortality but on the other hand lead to less cold-related mortality. Thus, it remains unclear whether the net change in temperature-related mortality burden will increase in the future under climate change. Object…

  • The natural history of drug use from adolescence to the mid-thirties in a general population sample

    K Chen, Denise B Kandel•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 43•References: 13

OBJECTIVES. This study sought to describe patterns of initiation, persistence, and cessation in drug use in individuals from their late 20s to their mid-30s, within a broad perspective that spans 19 years from adolescence to adulthood. METHODS. A fourth wave of personal interviews was conducted at ages 34-35 with a cohort of men and women (n = 1160) representative of adolescents formerly enrolled in New York State public secondary high schools. A…

  • Stages of progression in drug involvement from adolescence to adulthood

Denise B Kandel, K Yamaguchi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Studies on Alcohol and…•1992

Sequential stages of involvement in alcohol and/or cigarettes, marijuana, other illicit drugs and medically prescribed psychoactive drugs from adolescence to adulthood are investigated in a longitudinal cohort that has been followed from ages 15 to 35. Alternative models of progression are tested for their goodness of fit. Four stages are identified: that of legal drugs, alcohol or cigarettes; marijuana; illicit drugs other than marijuana; and me…
