    Open Access•C M Novo•ARTICLE•The Journal of Latin American and…•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Being “white‐mestizo” in Mexico and Ecuador is not only about skin color or phenotype, but also a way of acting that provides advantages to some groups over others. This article explores the privilege of claiming to protect and speak for others through a discussion of the concepts of paternalism, “maternalism,” and ventriloquism. Maternalism is highlighted given the important role played by upper‐ and middle‐class, White‐mestizo women as mediator…

  • Ventriloquism, racism and the politics of decoloniality in Ecuador

    C M Novo•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2018

This article discusses two forms of discrimination against indigenous people: ventriloquism and open racism, and argues that a transition from paternalism to open intolerance has taken place in Ecuador in the context of governmental emphasis on natural resource extraction. Ventriloquism, when non-Indians speak for indigenous people, is analysed through the Sumak Kawsay (Good Living) policies of the government of Rafael Correa (2007–2017). Public …

  • Introduction: Lasting and resurgent racism after recognition in Latin America

    C M Novo, Pavel Shlossberg•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2018

This special issue examines and theorizes lasting and resurgent forms of racism after recognition and claims to decolonization in Latin America. It also analyses what the authors interpret as a retrenchment in indigenous and Afro-descendant rights. The authors argue that this shift is underpinned by factors including extractivism, aided by the ability of neoliberal multiculturalism to shape, weaken and co-opt popular movements, and launched by a …

Two forms of discrimination against indigenous people in Ecuador are examined: ventriloquism, when non-indigenous people speak on behalf of indigenous people; and public racism, when State authorities use repression based on the humiliations practiced in their colonial past. The example of ventriloquism discussed is the concept of good living, or Sumak Kawsay, during Rafael Correa’s government. The examples of public racism are taken from the rep…

This forum examines a range of grounded struggles over efforts to materialize elements of a ‘postneoliberal’ agenda by social and political movements of the 2000s. Drawing from their research in Latin America and South Africa, the contributors ask when, where and why these experiments in realizing postneoliberalisms have prompted durable transformations in neoliberal political economic structures and social rationalities (or not). Theorizing from…

This article takes a historical approach to understand how ethnicity and race have been measured in the 2010 census in Ecuador. The history of census taking in Ecuador reveals a strategy of social control through the minimization of indigenous numbers. This strategy does not only originate in the state, but also within the indigenous group that has not revealed itself for a number of reasons such as well-founded suspicion, discrimination, and its…

    Open Access•C M Novo•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2003•Cited by: 10•References: 26

Representations of indigenous women vendors are contrasted with the ways indigenous women see themselves. Some images are openly hostile, whereas others discriminate against these women through a form of paternalistic love. For example, the understanding of indigenous women as outsiders from different social spaces and deviants from middle-class gender norms suggests that they are 'undeserving poor' whose interests should not be considered.
