Next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics capacity
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics are critical to infectious disease surveillance, outbreak detection and response, and the research and development of medical countermeasures. Achieving sustainable genomic surveillance requires countries to develop costed national strategies that integrate financial planning and budgeting across sequencing and bioinformatics activities. The genomics costing tool (GCT) was initially developed to…
Genomics costing tool
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is crucial for monitoring and investigating infectious disease outbreaks, providing essential data for public health decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly expanded pathogen sequencing and bioinformatics capacities worldwide, creating an opportunity to leverage these advancements for other pathogens with pandemic and epidemic potential. In response to the need for a systematic cost estimation approach …
Diagnostics for detection and surveillance of priority epidemic-prone diseases in Africa
In 2023, Africa experienced 180 public health emergencies, of which 90% were infectious diseases and 75% were related to zoonotic diseases. Testing capacity for epidemic-prone diseases is essential to enable rapid and accurate identification of causative agents, and for action to prevent disease spread. Moreover, testing is pivotal in monitoring disease transmission, evaluating public health interventions and informing targeted resource allocatio…
Investing in health preparedness, response and resilience
The world has seen unprecedented gains in the global genomic surveillance capacities for pathogens with pandemic and epidemic potential within the last 4 years. To strengthen and sustain the gains made, WHO is working with countries and partners to implement the Global Genomic Surveillance Strategy for Pathogens with Pandemic and Epidemic Potential 2022–2032. A key technical product developed through these multi-agency collaborative efforts is a …
Etiologies of influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory infections in Tanzania, 2017–2019
In 2016, Tanzania expanded sentinel surveillance for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) to include testing for non-influenza respiratory viruses (NIRVs) and additional respiratory pathogens at 9 sentinel sites. During 2017–2019, respiratory specimens from 2730 cases underwent expanded testing: 2475 specimens (90.7%) were tested using a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-developed assay co…
Population-based bloodstream infection surveillance in rural Thailand, 2007–2014
Population-based surveillance documented CO BSI incidence estimates higher than previously reported from Thailand and the region, with temporal increases seen in older populations. The most commonly observed pathogens including resistance profiles were similar to leading pathogens and resistance profiles worldwide, thus; prevention strategies with demonstrated success elsewhere may prove effective in Thailand
