Health literacy and hypertension-related multimorbidity
A change from limited health literacy to adequate health literacy had no direct effect on the onset of hypertension-related multimorbidity but did decrease the likelihood of its progression. Problem-solving indirectly mediated only the onset; meanwhile, motivation, self-efficacy beliefs and problem-solving mediated the progression of hypertension-related multimorbidity. Improving health literacy and self-management skills can play a crucial role …
High-risk human papillomavirus testing for underscreened populations
The provided estimates can serve to inform policymakers and researchers in the context of implementing hrHPV-based screening in diverse settings
Early evaluation of a screen-and-treat strategy using high-risk HPV testing for Uganda
Background: Uganda has a high burden of cervical cancer and its current coverage of screening based on visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) is low. High-risk HPV (hrHPV) testing is recommended by the World Health Organization as part of the global elimination strategy for cervical cancer. In this context, country-specific health economic evaluations can inform national-level decisions regarding implementation. We evaluated the recommended hrH…
Applicability of working abroad for physicians with a specialization in Global Health and Tropical Medicine
BACKGROUND: In The Netherlands, physicians specialized in global health and tropical medicine (Ps-GHTM) are trained to work in low-resource settings (LRS) after their training program of 27 months. After working for a period of time in LRS, many Ps-GHTM continue their careers in the Dutch healthcare system. While there is limited evidence regarding the value of international health experience for medical students and residents, it is unknown to w…

Mental Health and Quality of Life of Women One Year after Maternal Near-Miss in Low and Middle-Income Countries
Women who experienced a maternal near-miss are at risk of mental health complications and lower quality of life, but long-term consequences are largely unknown. The aim of this study is to assess whether mental health symptoms and quality of life change over time and to examine associations with risk factors among post-partum women. In this cohort study, women with maternal near-miss were matched to women without or with mild complications at Mna…
Effectiveness of a Comprehensive Health Literacy Consultation Skills Training for Undergraduate Medical Students
Comprehensible communication by itself is not sufficient to overcome health literacy related problems. Future doctors need a larger scope of capacities in order to strengthen a patient's autonomy, participation, and self-management abilities. To date, such comprehensive training-interventions are rarely embedded in curricula, nor systematically evaluated. We assessed whether comprehensive training increased these health literacy competencies, in …
