Economic evaluation of MSY-based fishery policy using input-output table
This study evaluates the regional economic impact of the MSY-based fishery policy on the squid industry, specifically in case of the Japanese flying squid ( Todarodes pacificus ) in Hakodate-city, Hokkaido Prefecture by coupling ecological-economic modeling. The results show that a 10-year MSY-based squid fishery in Hakodate would have an economic ripple effect of approximately −0.085 billion JPY in the case of normal recruitment, and 0.061 billi…
How blue financing can sustain ocean conservation and development
The ocean is suffering the adverse effects of climate change and intense human activities. When addressing these ocean risks, ensuring sufficient finance to sustain the marine ecosystem and resources is an ever-present challenge. Blue finance is a crucial tool to ensure ocean sustainability, aligned with economic growth. This article provides a conceptual understanding of this emerging concept and explores the potential of using legal and institu…
Impact assessment and a fiscal recovery policy for tsunami risk
Given Japan’s substantial exposure to many kinds of natural hazards, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons, it has been a priority to invest in resilience, guided by evidence-based modeling. In 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami became the costliest natural disaster ever recorded. This study applied a geographic information system using assumed tsunami-affected data calibrated in a recursive computable general equilibrium mod…
