Algorithmic Management in Traditional Workplaces
Algorithmic management ( am ) has become a key research focus in the sociology of work, especially concerning platform work. However, am tools are also impacting traditional workplaces. This study investigates three main questions: the impact of ai on high vs. low-skilled jobs, its effect on employee’s role, and the formation of collective voices around am , including non-traditional labour relations actors. The context is the Hungarian industria…
It takes two to code
The extension of artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic management mechanisms by companies has led to growing trade union demands to regulate their use. This article explores the role of collective bargaining and employee participation mechanisms in regulating the use by companies of AI and algorithms. This is done through a comparative analysis of institutional developments at EU level, as well as in four countries with different industria…
Emerging Platform Work in the Context of the Regulatory Loophole (The Uber Fiasco in Hungary)
Platform works are swiftly turning into a big, perhaps game-changing force in the labor market. From low-skilled, low-paid services (like passenger transport) to high-skilled, high-paying project-based labor (like developing artificial intelligence algorithms), digital platforms can handle a wide range of tasks. Our paper discusses the platform-based content, working conditions, employment status, and advocacy problems. Terminological and methodo…
Technological Development and the Labour Market
In our study, we analyse data from the Hungarian Microcensus (2016) in order to map the proportion of Hungarian jobs threatened by the spread of automation. In doing so, we use the internationally well-known methodology of Carl Benedict Frey and Michael A. Osborne who estimated the probability of computerization for 702 occupations. The analysis was then repeated by Panarinen and Rouvinen for the Finnish labour market by converting the probabilit…
Decision-making and human factors in the context of privatization and transformation
This contribution is based on a longitudinal research project in six Hungarian companies. The field-work lasted two years and included four years of retrospective tracing of events, giving data covering six years during the transition from centralized state control to attempts at introducing a market economy. The project adopted a micro-economic decision-making perspective to discover critical intra-organizational factors that could account for s…
Inheritance, imitation and genuine solutions (institution building in Hungarian labour relations)
A MULTINATIONAL SEEKING IN VAIN A UNION as a counterpart in bargaining; another multinational expelling union representatives from the firm; companies with good and bad labour relations; small and medium-size firms with no unions at all-all these may be found in news items, case-studies and episodes from the near past of labour relations in transformation and development in the post-socialist countries. After five to six years of the political, s…
Productive investment in Eastern Europe : waste of resources ? Serious completion delays ? Technological backwardness ? What is know of productive investment in planned economies of Eastern Europe ? There is an investment cycle which is marked by phases of acceleration and deceleration. The investment crisis has been apparent since the first half of the 1980's, and in certain Comecon countries (Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria) it is "accompanied" by me…
Labour Turnover and the Economic Organization
Incentive Problems in the Centrally Planned Economy of Hungary
Describes some of the difficult aspects of the period of transition of Hungarian economic reform from centralization to decentralization. Labor efficiency; Efficiency of the incentive systems; Incentive systems of different efficiencies; Description of the labor-management relations in the country; Characteristics of its labor force. (Abstract copyright EBSCO.)
Obstacles to the Introduction of Efficient Money Incentives in a Hungarian Factory
Examination of obstacles to the introduction of efficient money incentives in a Hungarian factory. Information on the company, its workers, and shop-floor problems; Need for labor-management cooperation; Divergence between management and worker goals; Workers' perceptions of their jobs; Role of the labor union. (Abstract copyright EBSCO.)
