  • Leaving Traces: Transformational Events and the Porosity of Human and Environment

    Open Access•Sarah M Pike, Sarah Pike•ARTICLE•Journal of Festive Studies•2023

Transformative events are described by participants as ephemeral, appearing in and then disappearing from particular landscapes. What were cities teeming with costumed participants, art, and music seem to become “empty” deserts and meadows once again. Most transformative events have some version of the rule “Leave No Trace,” yet they leave many kinds of traces, material and immaterial, intentional and unintentional. What matter stays on-site, alt…

  • Determining the Importance of Stopover Destination Attributes: Integrating Stated Importance, Choice Experiment, and Eye-Tracking Measures

Open Access•Sarah Pike, Filareti Kotsi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Hospitality & Tourism…•2022

Stopover tourism is an important but neglected area of study. This article combines a discrete choice experiment with eye-tracking measures and self-stated attribute importance ratings to analyze stopover destination preferences. The present paper investigates the impact of FoodPorn, or food photographs, on user-generated content (UGC) and its role in influencing the perceptions of ‘food trippers’ toward local culinary precincts in a metropolitan area in Australia. Adopting a mix-methods approach, 20 semi-structured interviews with food trippers revealed four antecedents of why they gaze upon FoodPorn on UGC, including usefulness, ease of use, affective gratifications and…

  • Been there, done that: Quasi-experimental evidence about how, why, and for who, a previous visit might increase stopover destination loyalty

Sarah Pike, Filareti Kotsi et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2021

Despite stopovers being a part of long-haul air travel since commercial flights commenced over 80 years ago, the first published research on the phenomenon did not appear until 2016. Also, even though destination image has been the most researched construct in the destination marketing literature, no studies had measured perceptions of a destination in the context of a stopover until 2018. This study makes a contribution to this emerging research…
