  • How regime legitimation influences Vietnam's strategy toward US–China strategic rivalry

Open Access•Phan Xuan Dung, Berching Ho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Asian…•2025

Vietnam has tried to maintain a delicate balance between the United States and China by pursuing a hedging strategy. In a shifting strategic environment marked by structural uncertainty caused by the rise of China, weaker Southeast Asian states like Vietnam are projecting a non-alignment posture. However, this rational behavior is not the product of systemic factors alone but also certain domestic political dynamics. We argue that regime legitima…

  • China's Political Worldview and Chinese Exceptionalism

Open Access•Berching Ho, Benjamin Ho•BOOK•China's Political Worldview and…•2025

This book uses the notion of "Chinese exceptionalism" as a framework to analyze China's international politics and foreign policy. It argues that China's approach to international relations is best understood in the context of these claims to exceptionalism and China's broader political world view. In doing so, it fosters a more comprehensive understanding of China's actions within the realms of foreign policy and international politics, and in t…

    Open Access•Basil Halperin, Berching Ho et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 23

We use a theory of apologies to design a nationwide field experiment involving 1.5 million Uber ridesharing consumers who experienced late rides. Several insights emerge. First, apologies are not a panacea—the efficacy of an apology and whether it may backfire depend on how the apology is made. Second, across treatments, money speaks louder than words—the best form of apology is to include a coupon for a future trip. Third, in some cases sending …

  • Why Trust Matters

Berching Ho, Benjamin Ho•BOOK•Why Trust Matters•2021

Have economists neglected trust? The economy is fundamentally a network of relationships built on mutual expectations. More than that, trust is the glue that holds civilization together. Every time we interact with another person-to make a purchase, work on a project, or share a living space-we rely on trust. Institutions and relationships function because people place confidence in them. Retailers seek to become trusted brands; employers put the…

  • Holding up Half the Sky? Ethno-Gender Labour Market Outcomes in China

Hua-Yu Sebastian Cherng, Reza Hasmath et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2018•Cited by: 3

Studies looking at gender and ethnic minority outcomes in China’s labour market have generally suggested that women and minorities are separately experiencing a wage disadvantage relative to males and the Han majority, respectively. But, what is the experience of this combined cohort, ethnic minority women? Using data from China’s 2005 one percent mini-census, this article discerns ethno-gender labour market outcomes by factoring education, labou…

Bhubhindar Singh, Sarah Teo et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal Of International…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 5

One of the biggest challenges for the East Asian region today is the Sino-Japanese relationship. Starting with the fishing trawler incident in September 2010, followed by Japan's nationalisation of the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, this relationship is experiencing an escalation of tensions in most, if not all, areas of the bilateral relationship. In response to the intensifying competition, China and Japan have elevated the importance of South-East As…

This article estimates wage differentials between ethnic minorities and the Han majority in China. While Han-minority wage differentials estimated with regression analysis demonstrate little evidence for ethnic minority disadvantages, evidence looking at the process of ethnic minority job acquisition and retention suggests that minorities perceive they are at a disadvantage in the job search process. The article assesses potential factors for per…

  • About Face—the relational dimension in Chinese IR discourse

Berching Ho, Benjamin Tze Ern Ho•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2015•Cited by: 7

The preservation of face is an important concept in Chinese behavioral patterns, both at individual and national levels. Beyond national interest considerations, modern-day diplomacy between China and the world also involves substantially the exchange of face. This article will argue that face represents a relational understanding of how China views and interacts with the world. By linking face to three themes that international relations scholar…

  • Understanding Chinese Exceptionalism

Open Access•Berching Ho, Benjamin Ho•ARTICLE•Alternatives Global Local Political•2014•Cited by: 8

As a branch of Chinese political thought, Chinese exceptionalism has recently been the subject of renewed scholarly analysis. By stressing what is unique about China, claims about Chinese exceptionalism seek to provide a different approach to the challenge of global governance, one not dominated by the liberal traditions of the United States and the West more generally. This article argues that Chinese exceptionalism—as understood by the Chinese …
