John Kenneth Galbraith's Contributions to the Theory and Analysis of Speculative Financial Markets
Although separated from his systematic analyses of modern corporate capitalism and its institutional culture, John Kenneth Galbraith's theory of speculative manias that informed his analyses of the great bubbles of 1929 and 1987 stand as a vital part of his legacy to modern economics. In this paper, we put his contributions to our understanding of speculative financial markets into historical perspective, and explain how the current relevance of …

Veblen and Hayek on Instincts and Evolution
In his 1898 article Why is Economics Not An Evolutionary Science ,Thorstein Veblen criticized the Austrian School (as represented by Carl Menger) for being unable to break with the classical tradition that economics is a taxonomic science(Veblen 1898, p. 73). The Austrian failure was attributed to a "faulty conception of human nature (ibid.)
New and old institutionalists on legal rules: Hayek and Commons
This article examines a particular facet of the new and old institutionalists, i.e., the similarities and differences between Hayek and Commons on legal rules. It is not clear, however, that sufficient uniformity exists between Hayek and other new institutionalists, to warrant any meaningful generalizations. These differences stem primarily from their alternative conceptions of the evolutionary process. We find Hayek interpreting in a manner that…

Thorstein Veblen's Theories of Governmental Failure: The Critic of Capitalism and Democracy Neglected Some Useful Insights, Hindsight Shows
In The Theory of Business Enterprise, Thorstein Veblen introduced a general theory of governmental failure in constitutional democracies based on the common man's delusion that policies benefiting businessmen also benefited him. This general theory runs consistently through Veblen's later works and was developed more fully in The Vested Interests and the Common Man. But other elements of an economic theory of government introduced in The Theory o…
Cost-Benefit Analysis in Planning for Tourism Development: The Special Problem of Socio-cultural Costs
Cost-benefit analysis has gained wide acceptance for evaluating public projects in developed economies, but continues to encounter stiff resistance from some quarters for evaluating tourism in less developed countries. Objections to the use of cost-benefit analysis centre on the issue of how socio-cultural costs are to be evaluated. This paper suggests a methodology for including socio-cultural costs and benefits in the traditional cost-benefit f…

Thatcher‐Reagan conservatism and Schumpeter's prognosis for capitalism
From his analysis of socio-economic change in capitalist societies, Jospeh A. Schumpeter concluded that observable trends were leading toward progressively anti-capitalist policies, and eventually a major social transformation to centralized socialism. [Schumpeter, 1950, pp. 59-164] The recent resurrection of conservatism as a dominant political presence in Britain and the U.S., manifested in the governments of Thatcher and Reagan, might appear t…
