  • A copula-based method for accommodating feedback in random effects panel models

    Open Access•David M Zimmer, David Zimmer•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2025

This paper proposes a copula-based framework for accommodating dynamic feedback in random effects panel data models. The method offers two advantages compared to the canonical existing approach. First, it connects more naturally to economic theory and therefore might offer improved fits to real-life data. Second, it does not impose restrictions on correlations between unobservables, which again might offer improved fits in settings where large co…

  • The effects of infant daycare on later-in-life employment outcomes

    Open Access•David M Zimmer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2024•References: 33

This paper first develops a theoretical model of the returns to daycare, which attempts to show that families enroll their children into daycare based on its expected benefits and costs. The paper then moves to an empirical study that seeks to determine whether enrolling an infant in daycare affects his or her later-in-life employment and poverty status. To identify the causal effect of interest, the econometric approach employs a recently develo…

  • The effects of absent fathers on adolescent criminal activity

    Open Access•David M Zimmer•ARTICLE•Journal of Demographic Economics•2023

Simple ordinary least squares estimates indicate that absent fathers boost probabilities of adolescent criminal behavior by 16–38%, but those numbers likely are biased by unobserved heterogeneity. This paper first presents an economic model explaining that unobserved heterogeneity. Then turning to empirics, fixed effects, which attempt to address that bias, suggest that absent fathers reduce certain types of adolescent crime, while lagged-depende…

  • The effect of flood mitigation spending on flood damage

    Open Access•David M Welsch, Matthew Winden et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2022

  • The Accuracy of Self-Reported Smoking Among Blacks

    Open Access•David M Zimmer•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2018•References: 1

Government agencies rely on surveys in which individuals self-report their smoking activities, which raises questions about biases in responses. To validate self-reported smoking numbers, medical researchers often rely on urinary concentrations of cotinine, the main metabolite of nicotine. But virtually all existing studies investigate whether self-reported nonsmokers misreport their smoking status. Such investigations leave unanswered whether in…

  • The Role of Copulas in the Housing Crisis

    David M Zimmer•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2012

Due to its simplicity and familiarity, the Gaussian copula is popular in calculating risk in collaterized debt obligations, but it imposes asymptotic independence such that extreme events appear to be unrelated. This restriction might be innocuous in normal times, but during extreme events, such as the housing crisis, the Gaussian copula might be inappropriate. This paper explores various copula specifications and finds that the degree to which h…

  • Using Trivariate Copulas to Model Sample Selection and Treatment Effects

David M Zimmer, Pravin K Trivedi•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2006

Simultaneous nonlinear econometric models with discrete outcomes are often difficult to implement. This article considers the use of the copula approach for a model with three jointly determined outcomes. It also deals with the discrete case in which outcomes include a mixture of dichotomous choices and discrete count data. We apply this technique to study self-selection and interdependence between health insurance and health care demand among ma…
