Expectancy, Motivation to Achieve, and Recall in Performance
Two groups of paid female students were employed in a modified Aronson and Carlsmith (1962) expectancy-performance design. Fifty-three Ss were in the Low-High condition, 59 were in the Low-Low condition. Overall results did not support predictions derived from dissonance theory. However, results supporting dissonance theory were obtained when expectancies, motivation to achieve and forgetting of individual Ss were systematically evaluated on an a…
Machiavellianism and Locus of Control: Two Conceptions of Interpersonal Power
Two conceptions of interpersonal power, Rotter's concept of internal-external control and Christie and Geis' concept of Machiavellianism were compared. The I-E scale and the Mach IV scale were given to 3 independent groups. In all 3 samples, external control Ss were significantly higher Machiavellian than internal control Ss. Results were discussed in terms of conflicting values reflected in the scale content of the two measures
Machiavellianism in Parents and Children
In order to extend Guterman's (1970) findings that Machiavellianism in parents and children is positively correlated, 50 families from a small, rural community in Northern California were selected at random and contacted. 16 suitable families, with a total of 27 children, completed Guterman's adaptation of Christie's Machiavellianism scale. The results support Guterman's modeling hypothesis that children of high Machiavellian parents tend to be h…
Systematic Variation in the Clarity of Demand Characteristics in an Experiment Employing a Confederate
60 female Ss were randomly assigned to observe an autokinetic light under one of three conditions, a no-confederate condition, a silent-confederate condition, and a talking-confederate condition. Predictions derived from Orne's construct of demand characteristics were generally confirmed, including the following: Variance of social influence scores was greatest for Ss with a confederate whose estimates were unknown to S; conformity to the verbal …
