  • Acquired Drive Strength as a Joint Function of UCS Intensity and Number of Cs-Ucs Pairings

    MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1977•References: 2

The form of the empirical law relating acquired drive strength to UCS intensity and number of CS-UCS pairings was investigated in two experiments using 120 and 30 male albino rats, respectively. Strength of UCS was varied at a broad range of intensities. Controls were introduced to prevent the intrusion of competing crouching responses (R1) on the measurement of response strength (R2). Acquired drive strength was found to be curvilinearly related…

  • Some Operational Distinctions between Acquired Drive Conditioning and Avoidance Conditioning

    MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976•References: 1

Some operational distinctions were made between acquired drive conditioning and shuttle-box avoidance conditioning. The acquired drive method was found useful for determining quantitative lawful relationships in aversive conditioning because such variables as the number of reinforcements, CS and UCS duration, and delay of reinforcement are more readily controlled with this method than with shuttle-box avoidance conditioning. The acquired drive co…

  • Acquired Drive Strength as a Joint Function of Ucs Intensity and Number of Cs-Ucs Pairings

    MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976

The empirical law relating acquired drive strength, as measured by the latency of a hurdle-jump response, to UCS intensity and number of CS-UCS pairings was investigated. The effect on acquired drive strength of varying the intervals between successive CS-UCS pairings was also investigated. Ss were 150 male albino rats, 125-160 days old. The apparatus was the classically conditioned fear apparatus. Acquired drive strength was found to be curvilli…

  • The Selection of Shock Intensities for Use as the UCS in Acquired Drive Studies

    MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976

Several methods of selection of the appropriate parameters of the UCS for use in acquired drive experiments were reviewed. Criteria were developed for the selection of UCS intensities based upon the rat's shock threshold and comparisons of the results of previous acquired drive studies. An attempt was made to standardize the description of UCS intensities used in the various acquired drive studies by converting voltages to amperages. Comparisons …

  • Stimulus Compounding in Classical Fear Conditioning

    MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1975

The effect of stimulus compounding in classical conditioning was investigated by conditioning one group of rats to a compound CS consisting of a buzzer and light and then conditioning separate groups of rats to the individual elements of the compound CS. On hurdle-jump test trials, the group of Ss conditioned to the compound CS performed better than Ss conditioned to the elements of the compound. Strength of conditioning to each of the elements o…

  • Effect of Static Background Cues on Classical Fear Conditioning

    MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1974

The duration of exposure of Ss to background apparatus cues was varied at two levels during classical fear conditioning. One group of Ss spent the entire intertrial interval between successive CS-UCS presentations in the shock-compartment of a conditioning box. A second group was placed into a neutral carrying cage during the intertrial intervals. A hurdle-jump response was used as an indicator of the magnitude of conditioned fear. The second gro…

  • Effects of Hippocampal, Amygdala, Hypothalamic and Parietal Lesions on a Classically Conditioned Fear Response

    Open Access•MELVIN L GOLDSTEIN•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

Experiments investigating the effects of limbic system lesions in a modified classical conditioning situation were performed on 68 rats. Pre- and post-operative tests were given to parietal and amygdalectomized Ss. Postoperative tests were given to parietal, hippocampal, and amygdalectomized Ss. Hypothalamic and amygdaloid Ss showed no evidence of learning the test response. Contrary to previous reports, it was found that animals with small hippo…
