  • Moderately elevated preconception fasting plasma total homocysteine is a risk factor for psychological problems in childhood

    Open Access•Joana Roigé-Castellví, Michelle Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2019

Objective We investigated the effect of maternal preconception fasting plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) on psychological problems in children aged 6 years from normal pregnancies. Fasting blood samples at 2–10 weeks preconception and non-fasting samples at birth were collected. Parents completed the Child …

  • Moderately elevated maternal homocysteine at preconception is inversely associated with cognitive performance in children 4 months and 6 years after birth

    Open Access•Michelle M Murphy, Joan Fernández‐Ballart et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2016

Prenatal methyl donor deficiency leads to homocysteine accumulation in the brain and impaired neurodevelopment in rats. We investigated the effect of moderately elevated preconception fasting total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) on child neurodevelopment in a prospective study of 67 and 76 mother–child pairs at 4 months and 6 years of age, respectively. Fasting blood samples at 2–10 weeks preconception, from the cord (nonfasting) and the mother and c…

  • Psychological Problems and Nutritional Status in 6-Year-Old Children

Open Access•Josepa Canals, Victoria Arija et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2005

There were no relations between nutritional status and psychological problems in 83 nonclinical 6-yr.-old children from low-risk socioeconomic and family backgrounds. Only Vitamin B12 and weight were significantly lower in the group with psychological problems. More in-depth longitudinal studies are necessary to confirm these results

  • Yoghurt in the Spanish diet

    Open Access•Francesca Capdevila, C Martí‐Henneberg et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2003

Objectives: This study aims to analyse the differences, with regard to socio-cultural characteristics and dietary habits, between low and high consumers of yoghurt and other fermented dairy product desserts, and the nutritional significance of these differences. Methods: We analysed the diet of a healthy population (4–65 years), using the 24-hour recall method, on three non-consecutive days. The participants were grouped by age and sex and were a…

  • The contribution of foods to the dietary lipid profile of a Spanish population

    Open Access•Gemma Cucó, Joan Fernandez-Ballart et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2002

Objective: To identify the food that has the greatest effect on the variation in the percentage of energy intake derived from fat and saturated fatty acids for the consumption of a Spanish population. Design: A cross-sectional study of food consumption, using the 24-hour recall method for three non-consecutive days, one of which was a non-working day. Subjects were interviewed by trained interviewers in the subjects' homes. We used multiple linea…

  • Age of pubertal onset affects the intensity and duration of pubertal growth peak but not final height

Open Access•Barbara Vizmanos, Carlos Martí‐Henneberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2001

This paper analyzed the intensity and duration of height growth during puberty in boys and girls in relation to rhythm of maturation. A longitudinal clinical follow‐up between ages of 10 and 20 years, was carried out in a sample of 251 children grouped according to age at pubertal onset: boys (genital stage 2) at the ages of 11 ( n = 28), 12 ( n = 38), 13 ( n = 42), and 14 ( n = 27); and girls (breast stage 2) at the ages of 10 ( n = 37), 11 ( n …

  • Preventive nutritional supplementation throughout the reproductive life cycle

    Open Access•Joan Fernandez-Ballart, Joan Fernández‐Ballart et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2001

Current interest in preventive nutritional supplementation strategies during the reproductive cycle in developed countries focuses mainly on iron and folic acid. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia. Inadequate iron nutrition is mainly a problem in developing countries but it also seems to affect a large proportion of pregnant women in the industrialised world. There is no chance for diet modification alone to meet iron requirement…

  • Scores on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children in a Longitudinal Study of Pubertal Spanish Youth

    Open Access•Josefa Canals, C Marti-Henneberg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

Changes in scores on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children for a sample of 534 pubertal adolescents were longitudinally studied over a period of 4 years. Biological development and other variables were investigated. For the 310 boys, A-trait scores decreased significantly with age. The 224 girls showed significantly higher scores than boys in all years of the study. No significant relationship was found between anxiety and pubertal matur…
