Effects of Reduced Central and Peripheral Catecholamines on Avoidance Learning
Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups of 10. Using an independent-groups design the 6-hydroxydopamine animals received intraventricular and IP injections of the drug. The sham drug rats received intraventricular and IP injections of a vehicle solution while the control subjects were not injected. When administered either centrally or peripherally, 6-hydroxydopamine specifically and extensively depletes catecholamine l…
Effect of an Adrenal Demedullation on Signaled, One-Way, Active Avoidance Learning
The effect of an adrenal demedullation on the acquisition of a signaled, one-way active avoidance response was examined in the rat. No significant differences in acquisition related to the adrenal demedullation were found on the four behavioral measures of response, avoidance and escape latency, and the number of avoidance responses. It was concluded that the catecholamines, epinephrine and norepinephrine, produced by the adrenal medulla are not …
Evaluation of an Aversive Technique as a Treatment for Alcoholism; Controlled Trial with Succinylcholine-Induced Apnea
In an attempt to produce an aversive response to alcohol with succinylcholine, 25 volunteer alcoholics at the Iowa City Psychopathic Hospital were each placed in a semireclining position with a hypodermic needle placed into an arm vein, with saline drip attached. Each patient was handed a glass containing an alcoholic beverage and asked to hold it, look at it, smell it and hand it back. This was repeated 4 times at 1-minute intervals. On the four…
