  • Self-study followed by discussion enhances learning for high school students

    Open Access•Jaeseo Lim, Jooyong Park•ARTICLE•Instructional Science•2026

A recent study by Lim and Park (2023) compared specific combinations of learning activities in higher education. They found that self-study followed by discussion led to better retention and transfer outcomes than more conventional approaches, such as starting with a lecture. In this study, we sought to replicate and extend these findings for high school students. Two experimental conditions were compared: discussion preceded by lecture and discu…

  • The Effect of Evaluating Others’ Decision-Making Results on Subsequent Decision-Making

Min Hae Song, Jooyong Park•ARTICLE•The Journal of Psychology•2026

Effective decision-making is crucial for both individuals and organizations. To improve individual's decision-making, traditional methods involve practicing and providing feedback. While these methods are effective, we propose evaluating others' decision-making as a more efficient training approach, and in this study, we explore its potential through two experiments. In Experiment 1,109 participants completed an initial task and then took part in…

  • Asking questions matters

Ji Won Yang, Kiroong Choe et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2025

The ways students learn through dialogue are diversifying, in terms of whom they engage with and how. With the recent advancement of AI chatbots like ChatGPT, learners can leverage aspects of dialogue, such as asking and answering questions, without a peer or instructor being present. Given the lack of experimental studies validating their effect, this study compares three dialogue conditions involving Peer, ChatGPT, and Intelligent Tutoring Syst…

  • Self-Study and Discussion Promote Students’ Science Learning

Open Access•Jaeseo Lim, Ji Won Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Education•2025

Many have investigated the effectiveness of teaching methods across different disciplines. In a previous study, we found the superior effectiveness of a two-part learning sequence consisting of self-study followed by discussion in humanities education. To examine the possibility of similar findings in science education, we compared that sequence with a traditional lecture–based teaching. Results indicate that self-study combined with discussion y…

  • The Impact of Hybrid Collaboration Methods on Idea Quantity, Quality, and Collaborative Interactions

Open Access•Min Hae Song, Jaeseo Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2025

The hybrid collaboration method, which combines individual and collaborative idea generation sequentially, can help generate more creative ideas compared to collaborating from the beginning, by encouraging active participation during collaboration. While the effectiveness of hybrid collaboration methods varies depending on the combination order of individual and collaborative idea generation, there is ongoing debate regarding the optimal order. T…

  • Peer assessment and individual contribution analysis for measuring collaborative problem solving capability

Open Access•Min Hae Song, Jung Ae Park et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2024

Accurately measuring collaborative problem-solving capability (CPSC) is not only important in itself, but also in order to develop education and training programs. However, most existing CPSC measurement tools have two weaknesses: not accounting for individual’s contribution to the final outcome and relying on predefined problems. Addressing these limitations, we extended criteria of the PISA 2015 framework to consider individual’s contribution t…

  • Self-study enhances the learning effect of discussions

Jaeseo Lim, Jooyong Park•ARTICLE•Journal of the Learning Sciences•2023

Background Academic learning in higher education requires diverse activities such as reading, reviewing, and discussion. However, there are relatively few studies on the effect of the combination of these activities on learning outcomes. In this study, we investigated the combination of self-study and discussions at a selective Korean university. Methods The present study compared the two-part instructional sequence of three groups: watching a vid…

  • Enhancing Asian University Education via Writing, Peer-Assessment, and Discussion

    Jooyong Park, Soonghee Han•ARTICLE•Asia Review•2022

  • Causal invariance as a tacit aspiration

Open Access•Jooyong Park, Shannon McGillivray et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Psychology•2022

For causal knowledge to be worth learning, it must remain valid when that knowledge is applied. Because unknown background causes are potentially present, and may vary across the learning and application contexts, extricating the strength of a candidate cause requires an assumption regarding the decomposition of the observed outcome into the unobservable influences from the candidate and from background causes. Acquiring stable, useable causal kn…
