  • Stairways to Heaven and Related Matters: New Light on Nergal and Ereškigal

    Open Access•Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Iraq•2024

The paper posits a link between the Standard Babylonian Version of Nergal and Ereškigal and the Jacob Cycle in Genesis (Gen 25-35), one anchored by the former story’s cosmic stairway and the stairway with its top in heaven appearing to Jacob in his famous dream. It is argued that the proper understanding of the motive for that specific parallel opens the door to a considerably broader one, which offers important insight on the two traditions. Thi…

  • Atraḫasīs, behind the First Sin That Cried to Heaven and Related Matters

    Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient Near Eastern…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This paper inquires about the source of human blood in the Biblical Primeval History, beginning with the report in the Cain and Abel story of bloodshed and a related cosmic-upsetting noise. It is posited that this unique report and the sophisticated case of ancient philology extending to it from the Eden story and relating ʾādām , “Adam,” dām , “blood,” and ʾădāmâ , “earth” are inspired by the Mesopotamian myth of Atraḫasīs , in which an equally …

  • Etana in Eden: New Light on the Mesopotamian and Biblical Tales in Their Semitic Context

    Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2021•References: 5

This paper proposes an unnoted major link, between the Mesopotamian Etana legend and Genesis's Garden of Eden story by pointing to parallels between the two stories, apparent at different levels, from the structural to the lexical. Cumulatively these point to a dependence by the Eden story on Etana, though it is argued that the appreciation of these matters in tandem, as put forth in this study, serves mutually beneficial purposes. The identifica…

  • New Historical Perspectives on the Babylonian Exile

Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel•2020

  • Albright, William F. (1891–1971)

    Open Access•Abraham Winitzer•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2018

William F. Albright was a major twentieth‐century historian of the ancient Near East. On the basis of the immense gains in textual and archaeological data from this world in his day, Albright sought to define a historical approach to the study of the Bible and the origins of Israel. This approach, he urged, was distinct from prevailing alternatives in biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies, which were viewed by him as subjective or insular. By…

  • A New OB Collection of Padānum and Related Omens in Los Angeles

    Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und…•2013

The following presents an edition of a heretofore-unpublished OB omen collection concerning the padanum, or “Path.” As may be expected, this text, larger than most of the known padānum collections, enhances our understanding of the zone in Mesopotamian extispicy known by that name, typically the second according to the standardized inspection sequence. An examination of the text, however, reveals an interweaving of omens concerning other zones be…

  • The Reversal of Fortune Theme in Esther: Israelite Historiography in Its Ancient Near Eastern Context

Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient Near Eastern…•2011•Cited by: 1

This paper examines the idea of reversal in Esther, arguably the most basic thematic constituent of that work, in an attempt to understand its background and meaning. It posits for it a historical context based on a reaction to contemporary ancient Near Eastern intellectual currents. Specifically this centers on Babylonian divination, astrology in particular, whose recognition as a serious branch of scientific reasoning in the ancient world was u…

  • Writing and Mesopotamian Divination: The Case of Alternative Interpretation

    Abraham Winitzer•ARTICLE•Journal of Cuneiform Studies•2011•References: 1
