William F. Albright was a major twentieth‐century historian of the ancient Near East. On the basis of the immense gains in textual and archaeological data from this world in his day, Albright sought to define a historical approach to the study of the Bible and the origins of Israel. This approach, he urged, was distinct from prevailing alternatives in biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies, which were viewed by him as subjective or insular. By contrast, he contended that his scientific assembly of data enabled an objective analysis of history with respect to the questions that mattered most.
