Effects of Reduced Central and Peripheral Catecholamines on Avoidance Learning
Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups of 10. Using an independent-groups design the 6-hydroxydopamine animals received intraventricular and IP injections of the drug. The sham drug rats received intraventricular and IP injections of a vehicle solution while the control subjects were not injected. When administered either centrally or peripherally, 6-hydroxydopamine specifically and extensively depletes catecholamine l…
Sleep Deprivation
The effect of sleep deprivation on behavior, thinking, motor performance, and biological energy transfer systems was studied in a single subject who remained awake without drugs for 220 hours. Behavioral changes included irritability, paranoid thinking, expansiveness, grandiosity, hypnagogic states, visual hallucinations, and episodic rage. Deficits in thinking and visual-motor performance occurred cyclically across days of wakefulness, with grad…
Stress and the Precipitation of Acute Intermittent Porphyria
Relationships between emotional stress and the precipitation of acute intermittent porphyria have rarely been suggested. Eldahl reported an episode occurring only two days after a traumatic event.6 Visher and Aldrich10 correlated urinary coproporphyrin levels with the emotional state of a patient and concluded that anxiety was important in determining the onset of her symptoms. Roth,9 after stating that porphyria occurred almost exclusively in pe…
