Empowering youth
This study investigates the role of Krajicek Peer Leaders (KPLs), young people aged 15–27 who organize activities on playgrounds in underserved neighbourhoods in the Netherlands. The aim of this study was to explore the requirements in selecting KPLs, their collaboration with local stakeholders, and the unique contributions they bring to both the Krajicek Playgrounds and their own development. A mixed-method approach was used including questionna…
Untangling the complex implementation process of community-based health promotion
Community-based programmes are a widely implemented approach for population health promotion. Due to the context-dependent and dynamic nature of these programmes, evaluating their implementation is challenging. Identifying key events in the implementation process in evaluation could enable us to support future implementation, while acknowledging the complexity of real-world implementation. We studied the nationwide implementation of the Dutch Hea…
Can Health-Enhancing Sporting Programs in Sports Clubs Lead to a Settings-Based Approach? An Exploratory Qualitative Study
There is limited knowledge about how a settings-based approach can be best applied in a sports club setting. This qualitative exploratory study examined whether and how sporting programs focusing on individual behavior change (i.e., increasing physical activity levels of inactive people) and implemented on the micro-level of the sports club, can be a first step towards a settings-based approach (i.e., inclusion of the meso- and macro-level of the…
Trends in Neuromotor Fitness in 10-to-12-Year-Old Dutch Children
Children with a low level of neuromotor fitness are less skilled to participate in sports activities. Moreover, lower levels of neuromotor fitness are related to adiposity, lower cardiovascular health and poor self-esteem in children. The aim of this paper was to determine neuromotor fitness in 10-to-12-year-old Dutch children over a ten-year period. Test scores measured in 2015/2017 (N=533 in 2015, N=941 in 2017) were compared with scores of sam…
Characteristics of insufficiently active participants that benefit from health-enhancing physical activity (Hepa) promotion programs implemented in the sports club setting
The results suggest that HEPA sporting programs can be used to increase HEPA levels of insufficiently active people, but it seems a challenge to reach the least active ones. It is important that promotional strategies and channels are tailored to the target group. Furthermore, strategies that promote family support may enhance the impact of the programs
