    Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Politique africaine•2023•Cited by: 2

I follow here three different prophetic movements in Africa with which I have been closely engaged. I highlight the singularity of the prophet vis-à-vis the group, as well as the difficulties built into the ethnographic method to combine the study of sudden historical transformation with the study of the structural dimensions of a society. I invite the reader to explore Bergson’s work on religion and morality as a resource to help us think the et…

  • Crise, Etnografia E Profecia

  • Learning Religion: Anthropological Approaches

David C Berliner, David Berliner et al.•BOOK•Learning Religion•2022

As we enter the 21st century, it becomes increasingly difficult to envisage a world detached from religion or an anthropology blind to its study. Yet, how people become religious is still poorly studied. This volume gathers some of the most distinguished scholars in the field to offer a new perspective for the study of religion, one that examines the works of transmission and innovation through the prism of learning. They argue that religious cul…

  • Fariba in the Shade: A Murmuration

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Sociétés politiques comparées…•2022

This text wants to provoke some thinking on the interplay between illumination and shadowing. Despite our best intentions, every effort to throw light onto something will create darker shadows and leave things in the shade. I first exemplify this with some cases of my own, and the proposition is then used to reconsider the optimistic enthusiasm with which many of us have embraced the epistemological rupture generated by the decolonial turn in ant…

  • How to Do Things with Secrets: Secrecy and Historical Imagination among the Baga of Guinea

    Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 13

By revisiting my ethnographic engagement with the Baga of coastal Guinea, West Africa, in this article I analyse, in the first place, the ways in which secrecy and its associated verbal arts (silence, metaphor, gesture) has worked as an 'imagination trigger' in a post-iconoclastic religious landscape in the 1990s and early 2000s, inviting people to create in their minds possible scenarios of pre-iconoclastic pastness and notions of 'double-ream',…

  • True brujos and imitators: A reading of Fernando Ortiz’s Los negros brujos (1906)

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2021

This article offers a reading of Ortiz’s first book, Los negros brujos (1906). By following the theme of “duplicity” that structures the loose notes that compose the volume, an argument emerges in which reality and copy, credulity and hypocrisy, “true brujo” and brujo criollo, state and fetish, temple and museum, etc., play against each other. This argument resonates not only with how similar pairs emerged in the study of African culture but also…

  • The Lives and Deaths of an Ethnographic Museum: History, Violence and Curatorial Collaborations in Guinea-Bissau

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró, Ana Temudo•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2021•Cited by: 3

This article discusses the history of the National Ethnographic Museum of Guinea-Bissau (West Africa) and an exhibition we curated about it in Bissau in 2017, which serendipitously led to its reopening. The Museum, which was created in 1988, had ceased to exist because of a civil war in 1998-99. Thanks to a reconstruction of contact prints in the archives of Bissau, we were able to organize an exhibition and to conduct research on the history of …

  • The shade of religion: Kyangyang and the works of prophetic imagination in Guinea‐Bissau

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró, M P Temudo•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2020

This article focuses on the Kyangyang (‘the shadows’ or ‘the shades’), a prophetic movement that emerged in Guinea-Bissau in 1984, in which ‘animistic’ Balanta farmers-and-herders learned to pray as Muslims and Christians do. We want to propose that (a) more attention needs to be paid to religious movements that bridge the polarisation between Islam and Christianity in West Africa and (b) a broader focus on the overall pluralistic setting is nece…

  • Further thoughts on iconoclasm

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2020•References: 1

Inspired by the thoughts of Zoë Strother, in this short piece I rethink my previous work on iconoclasm in West Africa, saluting her invitation to consider iconoclasm as part and parcel of African culture and her methodological combination of history, aesthetics and semiotics. Her approach and ideas have made me particularly aware of the relevance of iconoclasm (and its connection to debates around restitution) for a wider anthropology of place ma…

  • Atlantic Perspectives: Places, Spirits and Heritage

Markus Balkenhol, Ruy Llera Blanes et al.•BOOK•Atlantic Perspectives•2019

Focusing on mobility, religion, and belonging, the volume contributes to transatlantic anthropology and history by bringing together religion, cultural heritage and placemaking in the Atlantic world. The entanglements of these domains are ethnographically scrutinized to perceive the connections and disconnections of specific places which, despite a common history, are today very different in terms of secular regimes and the presence of religion i…

  • Prophecy

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

In anthropology, prophecy refers to the social effects of the voice and works of some individuals in times of crisis who claim to be following divine inspiration and who are perceived as being “charismatic,” exemplary, or powerful. These individuals, who have a particularly creative imagination explored by anthropologists in its several manifestations, are often successful makers of religious syntheses between old traditions and recent innovation…

  • Religious Pluralism and the Limits of Ecumenism in Mbanza Kongo, Angola

Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2018•Cited by: 2

Ecumenism has been a constant effort of many Christian agents in war-torn Angola ever since the 1960s, and certainly in the reconciliation initiatives that have taken place since the end of the war in 2002. Today, ecumenism is a structuring concept in the new law of religious freedom, which stipulates that, in order for religions to be legal, they must belong to an ‘Ecumenical Platform’. Yet, in the northern parts of Angola, Bakongo people rememb…

  • Between writing and art: The invention of Mandombe

    Open Access•Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Terrain•2018•References: 1

The Mandombe, graphic system invented by David Wabeladio Payi, responds to complex logic. As a system of writing and artistic creation, entirely conceived from the 5 and 2-shaped symbols that Wabeladio recognized in the lines joining the bricks of the wall of his bedroom, the Mandombe is a good example of writing that does not respond to the great classical functions. Wabeladio chose to prioritize mathematical elegance over ease, the spirit of sy…

Sub-Saharan Africa is frequently, but unjustly, seen as the periphery of the Muslim world, in terms of both geography and religious influence.By contrast, North Africa is considered to be directly linked to the alleged center of the Muslim world, that is, the Arab Middle East.In fact, Islam has had a presence in sub-Saharan Africa since the earliest days of its history. This chapter tries to redress the periphery bias in the analysis of African Mu…

  • Geração, presença e memória: A Igreja Tocoísta em Angola

    Open Access•R L Blanes, Ramon Sarró•ARTICLE•Etnografica•2015

    Ramon Sarró, R L Blanes et al.•ARTICLE•Politique africaine•2008•Cited by: 11•References: 1

This article analyzes some events related to the Kimbanguist church that have taken place in Portugal and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It unearths a connection between an increasing feminization of practices and narratives within this church and the emergence of an ideology of return to Africa linked both to eschatological beliefs and to notions of 'mission,' 'example,' and 'success.' The article shows the advantage of a multi-sited field…

  • Conclusion: Iconoclasm Undone

Ramon Sarró, Sarró Ramon•CHAPTER•The Politics Of Religious Change…•2008

This chapter presents some concluding thoughts from the author, and examples of the dialectic between flow and closure referred to in Chapter 8. It argues that iconoclasm continues as Guinea becomes increasingly fragile as a state, and that today’s youngsters are attacking the sites of power which they perceive as being at the root of their exclusion. Much as in the 1950s, in today’s Guinea the future lies in the hands of its younger citizens. Mu…

  • Between a rock and a hard place: Coastal mangroves in pre-colonial times

Ramon Sarró, Sarró Ramon•CHAPTER•The Politics Of Religious Change…•2008

This chapter highlights the importance of the mangrove ecology, with the Fouta Djall on its periphery, in shaping a distinct cultural identity. It show that the mangrove zone inhabited by peoples described in the sources as ‘Baga’ since the late fifteenth century has been crucial in providing them with a distinct cultural identity. The chapter also shows that their peripheral connection to a pre-colonial Fula state is as important as the ecology.…

  • Harlem City and the Ancestral Village: Youth and the Politics of Culture Today

It was a time of decentralisation and democratisation, and Baga were claiming their place in the second (1984–94) and third (1994–) republics (both with Lansana Conté as president). The chapter argues that cultural destruction does not occur as readily as some ‘pessimistic’ analysts have t…

Several changes occurred at the end of the colonial period. Older men appeared to be losing control of the ‘patriarchal’ status quo: young women did not belong to them any more; new musical instruments appeared that challenged notions of power, bringing to the abanka the sound of the wood; and, as if all this ‘modern’ soundscape was not enough, men now danced with their own sisters. This chapter addresses the question of why some elders became af…
