Interindividual Variation in Adult Gut Microbiome Composition in Two Rural Communities in Japan
OBJECTIVES: The "Japanese diet" has long been regarded as a key factor contributing to the remarkable life expectancy of the Japanese population. Given that the gut microbiome is thought to mediate the link between diet and health, this study investigated energy and nutrient intake among rural populations in Japan, who are presumed to adhere closely to the traditional "Japanese diet," and examined their association with gut microbiome diversity a…
Associations of Dietary Inflammatory Index Scores with the disability status and subjective health of older adults living in non-urban municipalities in Nagasaki and Ishikawa Prefectures, Japan
Objective: To examine associations of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores with disability and subjective health, which is prognostic of disability, in a large, systematically sampled population of older adults living in non-urban areas in Japan. Design: Cross-sectional. The Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence was used to assess disability. Urinary 8-Hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) Concentrations and Menstrual Cycle Characteristics in Female University Students
Higher concentrations of oxidative stress biomarkers are found in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, conditions linked to irregular menstrual cycles and menstrual pain. The aim of the present study was to test whether women with higher oxidative stress are more likely to show irregular menstrual cycles and severe menstrual pain compared with women with lower oxidative stress. A cross-sectional study was conducted targe…
Dietary selenium intake of the Gidra, Papua New Guinea
Selenium (Se) concentrations in the food of the Gidra‐speaking people of Papua New Guinea were measured by fluorometry. Animal foods contained Se in larger concentrations than plant foods. Animal foods of aquatic origin contained more Se than those of terrestrial origin. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed an association between Se and the animal's mercury content. Se concentrations in rice and wheat flour, which were imported from out…
