  • Neuroprotective and antioxidant properties of Polygala virgata fractions in a 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurotoxicity model

    Open Access•A D de Beer, W Rudolph et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2026

    P. virgata fractions reduced 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity via decreased oxidative stress and hyperpolarisation of the mitochondrial membrane, most likely ascribed to the identified xanthones, flavones and flavans. Isolation and purification of these compounds are warranted as potential antioxidant scaffolds

  • Catha edulis and Datura stramonium mitigate oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell death in an SH-SY5Y model of Parkinson's disease

    Open Access•T Mogale, A D de Beer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2026

Both plant extracts preserved cell viability, reduced ROS levels, and maintained mitochondrial integrity, highlighting their potential as therapeutic agents for PD
