Neuroprotective and antioxidant properties of Polygala virgata fractions in a 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurotoxicity model
P. virgata fractions reduced 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity via decreased oxidative stress and hyperpolarisation of the mitochondrial membrane, most likely ascribed to the identified xanthones, flavones and flavans. Isolation and purification of these compounds are warranted as potential antioxidant scaffolds
Catha edulis and Datura stramonium mitigate oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell death in an SH-SY5Y model of Parkinson's disease
Both plant extracts preserved cell viability, reduced ROS levels, and maintained mitochondrial integrity, highlighting their potential as therapeutic agents for PD
Cytostatic and cytotoxic effects of a hot water and methanol extract of Acokanthera oppositifolia in HepG2 hepatocarcinoma cells
Extracts were both cytostatic and cytotoxic in HepG2 cells. Mitochondrial toxicity was evident and contributed to reducing adenosine triphosphate production and fatty acid accumulation. Altered redox status perturbed proliferation and promoted necrosis. Extracts of A. oppositifolia may thus promote necrotic cell death, which poses a risk for inflammatory hepatotoxicity with associated steatosis
Effect of four medicinal plants on Amyloid-β induced neurotoxicity in SHSY5Y cells
Amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) is implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder. This study was designed to determine the effect of four medicinal plants used to treat neurodegenerative diseases on Aβ-induced cell death. Cytotoxicity of the ethanol extracts of the plants was determined against SH-SY5Y (human neuroblastoma) cells which were untreated, as well as toxically induced with Aβ, using the MTT and neu…
Effect of an alkaloidal fraction of Tabernaemontana elegans (Stapf.) on selected micro-organisms
Cytotoxicity and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity of an isolated crinine alkaloid from Boophane disticha (Amaryllidaceae)
Evaluation of Athrixia bush tea for cytotoxicity, antioxidant activity, caffeine content and presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids
Studies on antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of herbal remedies used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis
Studies on antibacterial, antioxidant and fibroblast growth stimulation of wound healing remedies from South Africa
Traditional herbal remedies used by South African women for gynaecological complaints
The effect of Senecio latifolius a plant used as a South African traditional medicine, on a human hepatoma cell line
