From Thaw to Deluge: Party System Collapse in Venezuela and Peru
What conditions facilitate party system collapse, the farthest-reaching variant of party system change? How does collapse occur? Numerous studies of lesser types of party system change exist, but studies of party system collapse are rare. This study draws on the existing literature and the cases of party system collapse in Venezuela (1988-2000) and Peru (1985-95) to advance some answers to the important questions about the phenomenon. The study p…

Discontent and the Expected Utility of Rebellion: The Case of Peru
Discontent theories of rebellion postulate that politicized discontent will have a strong independent effect on individuals' potential to participate in rebellious political action. Expected utility theories postulate that participation in rebellious action is motivated by expectation of reward and that discontent is relevant at most only insofar as individuals expect that collective action can be successful and that their participation is import…
An Empirical Analysis of Preferences in the 1983 Multicandidate Peruvian Mayoral Election
The 1983 four-candidate mayoral race in Lima, Peru, offers a chance to examine some notions from rational choice theory with empirical data. Data from a preelection Gallup poll test whether the winner-take-all plurality rule produced an undominated winner and an equilibrium result. The data produce a series of hypothetical pairwise races, assuming (by necessity) sincere voting and single-peaked preferences along an anti-incumbency dimension. Pref…
Political Participation in the Barriadas: An Extension and Reexamination
Existing research on the voting behavior of the urban poor in the Third World has frequently suggested that demand aggregation by political parties (especially in a multiparty system) is not clear-cut, and that the urban poor do not tend to demonstrate marked party or ideological preferences. By replicating, deepening, and extending an early study done in Lima, Peru, new research reveals patterns of candidate and party support hitherto unidentifi…
