“Se puede conservar la cultura y también se puede aspirar”: Language and Cultural Identities among the Cora of Mexico
This paper examines the connection between heritage language and culture and the construction and maintenance of social and personal identities of the Cora, an indigenous people of the Mexican Sierra del Nayar, in Northwestern Mexico. Using the frameworks of the socially and linguistically mediated mind (Dennet, 1991; Harré & Gillet, 1994; Searle, 1998) and the Continua of Biliteracy (Hornberger, 2002; Hornberger & Wang, 2008), the paper presents…

The Dictionary as Text
This paper is an examination of the dictionary from the standpoint of text grammer. The paper begins with a discussion of some issues raised by text grammer, e.g. the relationship between the form of the dictionary as text and the cognitive processes of users. The body of the paper focuses on the information structure of definitions (given-new ordering of senses), cohesion across senses, and the use of schema theory in predicting the interpretabi…
New Forms of Specialized Dictionaries
This paper discusses the form of entries and definitions in specialized dictionaries (e.g., dictionaries of the sciences). It is proposed that specialized dictionaries in the form of an Explanatory Combinatorial Dictionary avoid the problems of vagueness that afflict other specialized dictionaries. Some sample ECD entries for terms from geology, zoology, and physics are given. The paper closes with a discussion of the implications of specialized …

This book is a selection of papers from a conference which took place at the University of Keele in July 1982. The conference was an extraordinarily enjoyable one, and we would like to take this opportunity of thanking all participants for helping to make it so. The conference was intended to allow scholars working on different aspects of symbolic behaviour to compare findings, to look for common ground, and to identify differences between the va…

Topological linguistics
The topology of texts
This paper is a study of the formal structure of the semantic coherence of texts. It consists of a review and critique of previous studies of the topological structure of texts, and a re‐working of those proposals into linguistic topologies detailed in a previous paper by the author: i.e., into tolerance spaces. Analyses of certain literary texts in terms of these topologies are given, and such structures are considered in light of what they sugg…

Most of this book (the first 148 pages) is an English version of an introduction to linguistics originally published in Russian in 1969. This material has been expanded into a more standard-sized book for the English-speaking market by tacking on three articles on special topics in linguistics published elsewhere by one or both co-authors; but each of these articles is already available in English translation, and the book stands or falls by the …
