Peace Beyond Reach
William Langland uses Thomistic analogical thinking to depict the allegorical figure of Peace in Piers Plowman. A series of dynamic episodes shows how moral terms referring primarily to divine excellence become hollowed out through economic exchange and corrupt institutions. Pearl and Aquinas
This article compares the Pearl and Thomas Aquinas on emotions, will, reason, and the character of the virtues. I focus on the figure of the Jeweler, who in his struggle with grief and longyng, foregoes the high-medieval understanding of moral transformation found in Thomas.
