The Second Coming of Rodina
This article examines the unexpected revival of Rodina (Motherland), a nationalist party that had been suppressed in 2006 for its embrace of “orangist,” anti-Putin politics. Five years later, Rodina was relaunched in response to the crisis of the Medvedev–Putin “tandemocracy.” This article shows that Rodina played a central role in the Kremlin’s “managed nationalism,” which sought to direct the energies of Russian nationalists into loyalist chann…
Putin’s Fascists
The Putin regime and its propagandists have long claimed to be fighting the heirs of Nazi Germany. From its crackdown on domestic dissent to its aggression on the international stage, the Kremlin has regularly smeared its adversaries as fascists and fascist collaborators. Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which Putin claimed would achieve its 'denazification', brought this propaganda to a new level of intensity. This book shines a spotlight on the di…
Assistive products and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have placed great emphasis on the need for much greater social inclusion, and on making deliberate efforts to reach marginalized groups. People with disabilities are often marginalized through their lack of access to a range of services and opportunities. Assistive products can help people overcome impairments and barriers enabling them to be active, participating and productive members of society. Assisti…
The Reinvention of ‘Traditional Values’
Russia’s emergence as a leading opponent of universal human rights is one of the defining features of the Putin era. Under the banner of ‘traditional values’, Russian diplomats and clerics have re-forged cultural relativism into a weapon that can be used by repressive regimes to deflect criticism of their human rights records. This article examines the contribution of Nataliya Narochnitskaya, a historian and nationalist politician, to this exerci…
The Euromaidan and the crisis of Russian nationalism
This article examines the reverberations in Russia of the Euromaidan protests and the fall of the Yanukovych regime in Ukraine. It shows how the events in Kyiv provoked a major crisis in the Russian nationalist movement, which was riven by vituperative denunciations, the ostracism of prominent activists, the breakdown of friendships, the rupture of alliances, and schisms within organizations. Focusing on pro-Kremlin nationalists and several tende…
Sakharov would be with us
This article examines the surprising revival of dissident principles and dissident modes of protest in the Russian opposition during the Putin-Medvedev "tandemocracy" (2008-12). Its focus is "Strategy-31," a campaign of civil disobedience instigated by the radical activist Eduard Limonov. The first part of this article seeks to demonstrate how Strategy-31 employed what Charles Tilly terms a "repertoire of contention," a set of performed actions a…
Russkii Obraz and the politics of “managed nationalism”
This article examines the rise of Russkii Obraz, a Russian ultranationalist organization whose leaders cultivated a neo-fascist ideology and collaborated with skinhead gangs. Despite its extremism, Russkii Obraz played an important role in the Kremlin's “managed nationalism,” a set of measures to manipulate the nationalist sector of the political arena. During 2008–2009, Russkii Obraz collaborated closely with pro-Kremlin youth organizations and …
Putin's Preventive Counter-Revolution
This book examines the 'preventive counter-revolution,' a programme of reforms and repression that transformed the face of Russian politics during Vladimir Putin's second term as president. Kremlin propagandists hailed this programme as a defence of national sovereignty against Western attempts to foment a 'velvet revolution' in Russia. But this book shows that the Putin regime was reacting to a real domestic threat: opposition leaders and youth …
Rethinking the "Helsinki Effect"
There is a burgeoning scholarly literature on the Helsinki process, but Sarah Snyder’s ambitious new book is an original contribution on two levels. First, she makes the case for the role of transnational human rights networks. Her central contention is that the “international Helsinki network,” an informal alliance of Eastern bloc dissidents, Western nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and U.S. governmental structures, played a crucial role in…
Putin's ‘Preventive Counter-Revolution’
This article examines the emergence of a mobilisational authoritarian regime during Putin's second term. It argues that this development was shaped by the repercussions within Russia of ‘velvet revolutions’ in former Soviet republics. On the one hand, it traces the growth of the perception that Russia faced an imminent revolutionary threat. On the other, it shows how the Kremlin's counter-measures—the creation of the youth movement Nashi, the imp…

In this note, Robert Horvath poses the problem of the philosophical bases of the statistical description of states as it took shape in German universities in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Aristotelian philosophy which dominated study in Germany inhibited the bringing together of this literature with English political arithmetic and retarded the mathematization of social facts. While it opted for classification and description, it remained in t…
