  • ‘Regarding the scientific viewpoint in psychiatry’, lecture by Carl Wernicke (1880)

Open Access•Stephan Heckers, Kenneth S Kendler et al.•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2022

In 1880 Carl Wernicke gave this plenary lecture at an annual meeting of German physicians and natural scientists. He used principles from his 1874 aphasia monograph to build a neural model of mental illness. He proposed that the brain keeps a record of experiences in distinct areas of the sensory and motor cortices in the form of memory images, which allows for recognition of objects and the planning of motor acts. He conjectured that imperfectio…

  • Advanced Age Is Associated With Catatonia in Critical Illness

Open Access•Jennifer Connell, Ahra Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Introduction: Catatonia, characterized by motor, behavioral and affective abnormalities, frequently co-occurs with delirium during critical illness. Advanced age is a known risk factor for development of delirium. However, the association between age and catatonia has not been described. We aim to describe the occurrence of catatonia, delirium, and coma by age group in a critically ill, adult population. Design: Convenience cohort, nested within …

  • Visual-Tactile Spatial Multisensory Interaction in Adults With Autism and Schizophrenia

    Open Access•Jean‐Paul Noel, Jean-Paul Noel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Background: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SZ) exhibit multisensory processing difficulties and social impairments, with growing evidence that the former contributes to the latter. However, this work has largely reported on separate cohorts, introducing method variance as a barrier to drawing broad conclusions across studies. Further, very few studies have addressed touch, resulting in sparse knowledge about ho…

  • Reducing the Diagnostic Heterogeneity of Schizoaffective Disorder

Open Access•Katherine Seldin, Kristan Armstrong et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2017

When schizoaffective disorder patients meet DSM criteria B and C for schizophrenia, they resemble schizophrenia patients on several measures used to assess validity. The increased rate of anxiety disorders and suicidality warrants clinical attention. Our data suggest that a more explicit definition of schizoaffective disorder reduces heterogeneity and may increase validity

  • Increased Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations but Normal Hippocampal-Default Mode Network Connectivity in Schizophrenia

Open Access•Maureen McHugo, Baxter P Rogers et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2015

Our results indicate that although intrinsic hippocampal activity may be increased in schizophrenia, this finding does not extend to functional connectivity. Neuroimaging methods that directly assess hippocampal activity may be more promising for the identification of a biomarker for schizophrenia
