Cognitive Dysfunction in the Addictions (CDiA)
Substance use disorders (SUDs), including Alcohol Use Disorder, are pressing global public health problems. Executive functions (EFs) are prominently featured in mechanistic models of addiction. However, significant gaps remain in our understanding of EFs in SUDs, including the dimensional relationships of EFs to underlying neural circuits, molecular biomarkers, disorder heterogeneity, and functional ability. Transforming health outcomes for peop…
Lived Experience and Family Engagement in Mental Health and Substance use Health Research
INTRODUCTION: People with lived and living experience (PWLLE) and family members (F) can engage in mental health and substance use health research beyond participant roles, as advisors, co-researchers, equal partners and research leads. However, implementing meaningful and effective engagement is complex. METHODS: This article profiles five research initiatives involving different lived experience engagement structures, situated in a single terti…
Lower Levels of Gabaergic Function Markers in Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone-Expressing Neurons in the sgACC of Human Subjects With Depression
CRH+ cells in human sgACC are a heterogeneous population of GABAergic interneurons, although largely co-expressing VIP. Our data suggest that MDD is associated with reduced markers of inhibitory function in sgACC CRH+ interneurons, and provide further evidence for impaired GABAergic function in the cortex in MDD
The Role of Genetic Sex in Affect Regulation and Expression of Gaba-Related Genes Across Species
Although circulating hormones and inhibitory gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-related factors are known to affect mood, considerable knowledge gaps persist for biological mechanisms underlying the female bias in mood disorders. Here, we combine human and mouse studies to investigate sexual dimorphism in the GABA system in the context of major depressive disorder (MDD) and then use a genetic model to dissect the role of sex-related factors in GABA-r…
Abnormal Left-Sided Orbitomedial Prefrontal Cortical?Amygdala Connectivity during Happy and Fear Face Processing
Different patterns of abnormal prefrontal cortical-amygdala connectivity to happy and fearful stimuli might represent neural mechanisms for the excessive self-reproach and comorbid anxiety that characterize female MDD
