  • Effect of gender-affirming treatments on depression and anxiety symptoms in transgender people

Open Access•C Shun Wong, Chun Yip Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Gender-affirming medical treatments alone may not entirely resolve the mental health difficulties faced by transgender individuals. Future research needs to better elucidate the impacts of persistent psychosocial challenges such as discrimination and rejection, as well as potential treatment complications. The treatment-seeking nature of this cohort, coupled with baseline psychiatric interventions, may have obscured significant correlations. Whil…

  • Mental health problems and social functioning across different treatment stages in Chinese subjects with gender dysphoria in Hong Kong

Open Access•Wing Ki Tang, P Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Lifetime comorbidity is common in Hong Kong GID Clinic patients with gender dysphoria. Gender-affirming treatments and social support are linked to a better quality of life and self-esteem. Hormone therapy and social support are associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms. Our finding preliminarily suggested better mental health and adjustment in patients with favorable social support who received gender-affirming treatments

  • Prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideation in the general public during the fifth wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Hong Kong

Open Access•Heidi Ka Ying Lo, Joe Kwun Nam Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

A significant proportion of people experienced suicidal ideation during the peak of fifth COVID-19 wave. Risk and protective factors identified would facilitate early identification of high-risk individuals and provision of targeted interventions to minimize suicidal ideation and risk of self-harm. Caution should be exercised due to study limitations of a cross-sectional design which precluded establishing causality among variables, and reliance …

  • Relationships between psychopathological symptoms, pandemic-related stress, perceived social support, and Covid-19 infection history

Open Access•Chi Kei Krystal Lee, Kwun Nam Joe Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Our findings indicate that specific interventions targeting interpersonal conflicts and concentration problems as well as facilitating stress buffering effects of social support may represent effective strategies to reduce psychological distress in university/college students during COVID-19 and should be considered for future pandemic preparedness

  • Sleep problems in children with autism spectrum disorder in Hong Kong

Open Access•Man Ho Brian Leung, Sze Ting Joanna Ngan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

In summary, autistic children suffered from significantly more sleep problems and co-occurring separation anxiety disorder brings greater sleep problems as compared to non-autistic children. Clinicians should be more aware of sleep problems to provide more effective treatments to children with autism

  • Prevalence and correlates of subjective cognitive impairment in Chinese psychiatric patients during the fifth wave of Covid-19 in Hong Kong

Open Access•Vivian Shi Cheng Fung, Jacob Man Tik Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Almost half of the sample of psychiatric patients reported cognitive complaints during fifth-wave of COVID-19 in HK. Greater depressive and PTSD-like symptom severity, and maladaptive (avoidant) coping were found as correlates of SCI. COVID-19 related factors were not independently associated with SCI in psychiatric patients. Early detection with targeted psychological interventions may therefore reduce psychological distress, and hence self-perc…

  • Evaluating the Efficacy of Electrical Vestibular Stimulation (VeNS) on Insomnia Adults

Open Access•Teris Cheung, Joyce Yuen Ting Lam et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Insomnia is a common health problem in the general population. There are different ways to improve sleeping habits and quality of sleep; however, there is no clinical trial using transdermal neurostimulation to treat individuals with symptoms of insomnia in Asia. This gives us the impetus to execute the first study in Asia which aims to evaluate the efficacy of Electrical Vestibular Stimulation (VeNS) on individuals with insomnia in Hong Kong. Th…

  • Effects of Transcranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS) on Adults with Symptoms of Depression—A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

    Open Access•Teris Cheung, Tim M H Li et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) is a recent development in non-invasive brain stimulations (NIBS) that has been proven to be effective in terms of significantly improving Alzheimer patients' cognition, memory, and execution functions. Nonetheless, there is, currently, no trial evaluating the efficacy of TPS on adults with major depression disorder (MDD) nationwide. In this single-blinded, randomized controlled trial, a 2-week TPS treatment c…

  • The Effectiveness of Electrical Vestibular Stimulation (VeNS) on Symptoms of Anxiety

Open Access•Teris Cheung, Joyce Yuen Ting Lam et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The prevalence of symptoms of anxiety is increasing, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. A home use transdermal neurostimulation device might help to minimize the severity of anxiety disorder. To the best of our knowledge, there is no clinical trial using transdermal neurostimulation to treat individuals with symptoms of anxiety in Asia. This gives us the impetus to execute the first study which aims at evaluating the efficacy of Electrical …

  • Evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of Transcranial Pulse Stimulation on Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Open Access•Teris Cheung, Yuen‐Shan Ho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common developmental disorder in children. The latest non-intrusive brain stimulation (NIBS) technology-transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS)-has been proven effective in older adults with mild neurocognitive disorders and adults with major depressive disorder. Nonetheless, there is so far no robust randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted on adolescents with ASD nationwide. This study proposes a two-armed …

  • Mindfulness Awareness Is Associated With a Lower Risk of Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults With Neurocognitive Disorders

Open Access•Linda Lam, Linda Chiu Wa Lam et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Apart from depressive disorders, there are great interests in adopting mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) for other mental health conditions. Depression and anxiety are common in people with neurocognitive disorders (NCD). The potential of MBIs as an adjuvant treatment in this cognitively at-risk group should be further explored. Objectives: The current study explored the association between depression and anxiety symptoms with di…

  • Depression, Anxiety and Stress on Caregivers of Persons with Dementia (CGPWD) in Hong Kong amid Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Tommy Kwan Hin Fong, Tommy Kwan-Hin Fong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

High prevalence of depressive symptoms was noted among our CGPWD sample and these symptoms seemed to worsen substantially. Contingent online mental health support should be prioritized to those CGPWD to reduce psychiatric morbidity and the global disease burden
