More empathy for others, more hurt for oneself? Empathy for pain is related to poor mental health and negative emotion regulation
These findings reveal a previously unrecognized link between empathy for pain and mental health, mediated by the increased use of negative emotion regulation strategies among responders. Our findings have particular implications for the mental health of empathic individuals or people who are often exposed to the pain of others (counselor or nurse, etc.)
Elucidating the relationship between burnout and sleep disturbances among firefighters
Our findings offer some enlightenment into further understanding the relationship between burnout and sleep disturbances in firefighters. Furthermore, the aforementioned central, bridge, and activation domains may be potential targets for prevention and intervention
Cross-cultural insights into internet addiction and mental health
The study highlights significant differences in the network structures of internet addiction and mental health between China and Malawi, which underscore the importance of culturally sensitive mental health interventions. In Malawi, addressing functional impairments related to academic and work performance is crucial, while in China, interventions should focus on emotional and relational aspects
Characterizing impulsivity in individuals with methamphetamine and methcathinone use disorders
These findings suggest that MUD and MCUD participants differ in impulsivity traits but not in impulsive behaviors, implying that impulsive traits and behaviors represent different aspects of impulsivity
Network Analysis of Childhood Maltreatment, Anxiety, and Addictive Non-Suicidal Self-injury in Adolescents
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents is becoming a widespread health issue. Recent studies have suggested that repetitive NSSI is crucial in NSSI adolescents and can be conceptualized as an “addictive behavior.” The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the network relationships among child maltreatment, anxiety, and addictive NSSI in adolescents. In total, 542 adolescents (14.07 ± 2.15 years old, 18.6% males) with NSSI behav…
Multiple mediation of the association between childhood emotional abuse and adult obesity by anxiety and bulimia – a sample from bariatric surgery candidates and healthy controls
Bulimia, which means a person has episodes of eating a very large amount of food (bingeing) during which the person feels a loss of control over their eating, is the most primitive reason for being overweight and obese. The extended literature has indicated that childhood emotional abuse has a close relationship with adverse mood states, bulimia, and obesity. To comprehensively understand the potential links among these factors, we evaluated a mu…
Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among healthcare workers during the Omicron era
These findings suggested that improving the state of euthymia, getting social support from others could alleviate PTSD symptoms among healthcare workers during the COVID-19
The effects of childhood maltreatment on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury behavior
We found that NSSI adolescents have a higher proportion of childhood maltreatment. Impulsivity plays a mediating role between childhood maltreatment and NSSI behaviors
The Structure and Individual Patterns of Trait Impulsivity Across Addiction Disorders
Risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents
How Impulsiveness Influences Obesity
Impulsiveness is a stable personal characteristic that contributes to obesity and may interact with it. Specifically, obesity is caused by unrestrained impulse eating that is not consciously controlled and leads to a hormonal imbalance that also can impair impulse control. However, the mechanism of this relationship is unclear. In our study, 35 obese individuals (body mass index, BMI > 28) were recruited and matched with 31 healthy controls (BMI …
Neuropsychiatric symptoms and altered sleep quality in cerebral small vessel disease
Background Sleep disturbance and neuropsychiatric symptoms are common clinical symptoms of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), but the underlying mechanism is unclear. Here, we investigated the relationship between sleep quality and neuropsychiatric performance in patients with CSVD. Methods A total of 30 patients with CSVD and 35 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. The 13-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-13), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)…
Trait Anxiety Mediates Impulsivity and Suicidal Ideation in Depression During Covid-19 Pandemic
Suicidality in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) has been an urgent affair during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is well-established that impulsivity and trait anxiety are two risk factors for suicidal ideation. However, literature is still insufficient on the relationships among impulsivity, (state/trait) anxiety and suicidal ideation in individuals with MDD. The present study aims to explore the relationships of these three variables in …
Impaired Outcome Evaluation During Risky Decision-Making in Individuals with Methamphetamine Use Disorder
Characterizing Impulsivity in Individuals with Heroin Use Disorder
Pictures Library of Smoking Cravings
Background: The cue-induced craving by addiction related materials is commonly employed in addiction research; however, no existing standardized picture database based on the expectation model of craving has been developed. We prepared and validated a Pictures Library of Smoking Cravings (PLSC) in this study. Methods: We captured pictures 366 smoking and 406 control pictures (matched in content). We selected 109 smoking pictures and 115 control p…
The Influences of Impulsivity and Education Levels on Severity of Alcohol Dependence
Self-reported impulsivity affects the severity of alcohol dependence, which might be different in patients with different education levels
