Climate Change and El Niño Events in the Ancient Andes
Exploring archaeological evidence for historic smallpox epidemics in the Americas
Climate change intensified violence in the south-central Andean highlands from 1.5 to 0.5 ka
The archaeology of the pre-contact Andes provides an ideal study of human responses to climate change given the region's extreme climatic variability, excellent archaeological preservation, and robust paleoclimate records. We evaluate the effects of climate change on the frequency of interpersonal violence in the south-central Andes from ca. 1.5–0.5 ka (AD 470–1540) by comparing incidents of skeletal trauma observed among 2753 crania from 58 site…
The limited efficacy of 3D models for teaching students sex estimations based on cranial traits
The use of 3D digital imaging methods has increased within biological anthropology and medical research. Although digital renderings can be easily shared by researchers or used for student learning modules in osteology, limitations to using 3D models exist, requiring institutions of higher learning to invest in real bones or casts of human skeletal remains for labs. Here, we examine whether 3D digital models are viable proxies for real bones by t…
Developing Privacy Rights in Nineteenth-Century Germany
Legal historian James Whitman has claimed that privacy rights in Germany are fundamentally different from privacy rights in America. According to Whitman, German privacy rights are predicated on dignity and require state intervention to uphold them, while American privacy rights protect the individual against state intervention. This paper argues that the history of rights in Germany, particularly the history of privacy rights, is far more compli…
