This article presents the results of the 2018–2021 seasons of excavation undertaken at the Darband-i Rania pass in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Fieldwork at Qalatga Darband saw the completion of excavation of the monumental fortified manor together with the geophysical mapping of the square fort and other areas of the site. • Middle Islamic Rural Occupation at Kani Shaie in Iraqi Kurdistan

Mustafa Ahmad, Steve Renette•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Society…•2023

A wave of new fieldwork in Iraqi Kurdistan during the past decade offers the opportunity to study societies of the Islamic periods from an archaeological perspective. Unfortunately, our current understanding of ceramic typology and chronology in the region still hinges overwhelmingly on datasets from major urban centers and the long-standing analysis of the technological development of glazed wares. The material culture of rural communities, on t…

  • The opioid industry document archive

Open Access•Ross Mackenzie, Brian Hawkins et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2023

The opioid crisis in the United States has resulted in more than 500,000 deaths since 1999, and recent estimates suggest that attributable deaths could reach 842,000 by 2032. While heroin and synthetic products such as fentanyl now account for the majority of opioid overdoses, the prescription opioid crisis that emerged in the mid-1990s was the primary antecedent to the current situation. Recent settlements in litigation against opioid producers,…

Open Access•John Macginnis, Kamal Rasheed Raheem et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•2020

This paper presents the results of the work of the new field initiative launched by the British Museum at the Darband-i Rania pass in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The pass is located at the northeastern corner of Lake Dokan, where, though now subsumed into the lake, the Lower Zab flows from the Peshdar into the Rania Plain. It is a strategic location on a major route from Mesopotamia into Iran, and control of both the road and the river must alw…

  • Portraits of a Parthian King

Open Access•Michael Brown, Peter A Miglus et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•2018

This article presents detailed illustrations of two rock-reliefs from the neighbouring sites Rabana and Merquly, located on the flanks of Mt. Piramagrun in Iraqi Kurdistan. Both matching sculptures are aligned with perimeter fortifications that enclose substantial architectural remains. Based on numismatic parallels, supported by archaeological evidence, it is proposed that these depictions of near life-size figures represent an anonymous Arsacid…
