A description of language attitudes and achievements of Russian immigrant students at Haifa university
As a result of the recent wave of over half a million immigrants from the former Soviet Union to Israel, a unique opportunity to conduct a large‐scale study of the attitudes and achievements of immigrants studying at the tertiary level has presented itself. Our study was limited to students at Haifa University. A series of questionnaires probing the students’ language use and attitudes were administered in order to provide a general description o…
Circassian Israelis: Multilingualism as a way of life
The Circassian community in Israel, though one of the smallest in the diaspora (about 3000), is also one of the most successful in preserving its national identity and language, while at the same time integrating into Israeli life. We have recently launched a multi‐disciplinary study of this unique community in Israel, which we hope will become part of a broader study of Circassian communities both in the diaspora (Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Germany …
A Second Missed Opportunity: Russian in Retreat as a Global Language
Models of language competition usually favor the central language over those of the peripheries. Yet the Russian language has failed to establish its hegemony both in the tsarist and Soviet empires. While the tsarist period is briefly touched upon in the Introduction, the paper concentrates on the "missed second opportunity"—the Soviet and post-Soviet period. It attempts to explain the causes for the second failure against a broad historical back…

A Neglected Source of Lenin's Nationality Policy
Lenin's crucial role in formulating and laying the foundations of Soviet nationality policy is acknowledged by all. His nationality program-whether one views it as opportunist and pseudo-Marxist or as "the outstanding contribution to the treasure trove of creative Marxism"-is considered to be his most original and perhaps most successful policy. Lenin's lasting impact on the nationalities themselves is attested by the fact that national dissident…
