  • Of mouths and men

Open Access•Robert J Jarvella, Eva Bang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2001•Cited by: 6

Advanced Danish students of English as a foreign language tried to identify the national origin of young men from Ireland, Scotland, England and the USA from their speech and rated the speech for attractiveness. Two male speakers from each country were heard reading lists of words aloud (Experiment 1) and making utterances that could be used to say hello to someone, thank them, swear at them, or say good‐bye (Experiment 2). In both studies, listen…

  • Text, topos, and mental models

    Robert J Jarvella, Lita Lundquist et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1995•References: 23

We examine how predications in text affect the inferences which are generated and used during reading. Inferences of the so‐called “topos” type, that is, the more votes X gets, the more likely X will win (Anscombre, 1989; Ducrot, 1988) were explored in the reading of texts describing competitions which involved two main participants. The texts contained ambiguous definite noun phrases, as in “In the first round, John Smith got almost/only 500 vot…

  • Ups and Downs in Scalar Inferences

    Lita Lundquist, Robert J Jarvella•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•1994

We examine the notion (Ducrot 1988; Anscombre 1989) that use of scalar adverbs such as almost and only gives rise to systematic semantic inferences. Inferences of the so-called ‘topos’ type were explored in sentence pain in Danish and Finnish texts describing competitive events. An antecedent sentence describing a level of achievement obtained in terms of almost p or only p was predicted to give rise to a reasoning scheme involving two scales and…

  • Scales in the Interpretation of Words, Sentences, and Texts

    Robert J Jarvella, Lita Lundquist•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•1994

Scales implicit in the interpretation of words, sentences, and texts were studied in a series of five experiments in French. In Experiments 1 and 2, readers chose an arrow pointing upwards or downwards as corresponding, or being contrary to, the meaning of scalar expressions and sentences drawn from texts about competitions. A large degree of consensus among these judgments was obtained at both word and sentence levels; in judging sentences, a sp…

  • The effect of delaying a word’s final letters on its naming latency

Open Access•GÖREL SANDSTRÖM, Robert J Jarvella et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1990

Dans une experience portant sur le temps de latence dans la prononciation d'un mot, les As comparent quatre hypotheses sur l'acces lexical de mots ecrits. Les sujets sont des adultes locuteurs natifs hollandais

  • The Process of Language Understanding

    Catherine A Jackson, Giovanni B Flores d'Arcais et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1985

Discusses how people understand ordinary language both spoken and written. Consolidates existing data on language perception and challenges commonly held conceptions of the cognitive substrate. Linguistically cuts from the subword level up through phrases and sentences to the frame of discourse. Reports recent experimental findings

  • Syntactic processing of connected speech

    Open Access•Robert J Jarvella•ARTICLE•Journal of Verbal Learning and…•1971

  • Mother-to-Child Speech at Two Years

    Norma M Ringler, John H Kennell et al.•ARTICLE•WORD•1971•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Ten primiparous mothers were randomly selected from two groups of women who had spent different amounts of time with their newborn infants. The speech behavior of the mothers in the two groups was compared while they were addressing their two-year-old children in an informal play situation. The speech patterns of the mothers revealed that those who had been given extra contact with their infants during the neonatal period used significantly more …
