The representation of sC-clusters
sC-clusters have always posed a challenge for theories of phonological representation because they behave like coda-onset clusters, but they can also occur word-initially (where their behaviour typically differs from that of branching onsets comprising an obstruent followed by a sonorant). [s] in such initial clusters has been analysed as an appendix, as a coda, or as part of a complex segment. Out of these possibilities, the coda analysis (where…

Vowels, glides, off-glides and on-glides in English
Syncope, syllabic consonant formation, and the distribution of stressed vowels in English
Post-tonic synope in English (Received Pronunciation) optionally deletes a schwa between a stressed and an unstressed vowel ( gén ( e ) ral ), but it cannot apply if the vowel following the schwa is stressed ( gén *( e ) ràte ), or if no vowel follows ( hápp *( e ) n ). Syncope is thus triggered by a metrical lapse of unstressed vowels. In addition, short stressed vowels cannot occur in an open syllable in English (Stress-to-Weight), except when …

Vowel Harmony
Vowel harmony and disharmony in Turkish
This article analyses vowel harmony and disharmony in Turkish in a framework which combines tools of Optimality Theory and Government Phonology. I argue that harmony only operates in derived forms; that is, it is no longer active inside roots. This type of blocking on harmony follows from a non-derivational version of the Strict Cycle Condition. The same mechanism accounts for the behaviour of one group of disharmonic suffixes about which I claim…
