  • The Palgrave Handbook of Political Norms in Southeast Asia

Open Access•Gabriel Facal, Elsa Lafaye De Micheaux et al.•BOOK•The Palgrave Handbook of…•2024

This open access handbook aims to constitute a reference point on political norm dynamics in Southeast Asia, by bringing together the array of normative repertoires that frame the possibilities for citizens to participate in, set agendas for, make decisions in, and contest, not only electoral and institutional politics but also informal and imaginary political spaces. It sheds light on intersecting political and social transformations and their c…

  • Introduction—Political Norms in Southeast Asia: Overlapping Registers and Shifting Practices

Open Access•Gabriel Facal, Elsa Lafaye De Micheaux et al.•CHAPTER•The Palgrave Handbook of…•2024

Political norms in Southeast Asia are undergoing major and rapid reconfigurations. This has been thrown into sharp relief in connection with recent global affairs, including responses to and engagements with the redefinition of power relations in the Indo-Pacific, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Even more readily manifest are these shifts in upheavals particular to the region, such as deepening authoritarianism across mainland Southeast Asia, and in m…

  • Civil Society Elites - Field Studies from Cambodia and Indonesia

Astrid Norén-Nilsson, Amalinda Savirani et al.•BOOK•Civil Society Elites - Field…•2023

This innovative volume is the first systematic study of civil society elites in Southeast Asia (and indeed anywhere in the world). Spanning two previously separate areas of research – civil society and elites – it sheds new light on power inequalities within and beyond civil society, identifies different types of elite formation and elite interaction within and beyond civil society, and traces interactions and integration with elite groups from p…

  • Liberalism in Cambodia: Broken Lineages

    Open Access•Astrid Norén-Nilsson•ARTICLE•Asian Studies Review•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article seeks to recover strands of liberalism in Cambodian politics from the period leading up to Independence onwards. It uses Bell’s (2014) summative conception of the liberal tradition, which understands liberalism contextually as a constructed and contested historical phenomenon. The starting point of the analysis is liberalism from the vantage point of the present: today’s half-hearted liberals, and those they may bring up when tracing…

Cambodia’s transition from competitive to hegemonic authoritar-ianism, begun with a crackdown in 2017 which saw the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party dissolved, and institutionalised in non-competitive parliamentary elections in 2018 in which long- incumbent Cambodian People’s Party won all seats, has been teem-ing with references to the monarchy. Whilst Prime Minister Hun Sen has long built a complex set of regal legitimations elevating …

    Open Access•Astrid Norén-Nilsson, Netra Eng•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Elitisation in Cambodian civil society and how such processes relate to holding elite status in the state, electoral politics, and economic fields, is poorly understood. This article seeks to identify different pathways to becoming an elite within and beyond Cambodian civil society. We focus on four case studies, representing different forms of organisations within the sectors of agriculture and youth. Three main questions are explored. Firstly, …

  • Kem Ley and Cambodian Citizenship Today: Grass-Roots Mobilisation, Electoral Politics and Individuals

    Open Access•Astrid Norén-Nilsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Southeast…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Starting with a bang in 2013 and ending silently in 2017, Cambodia experienced a brief democratic momentum that saw people taking to the streets to demand political change. Kem Ley – a political analyst and grass-roots organiser – provided a rallying point that ordinary Cambodians gathered around particularly after his 2016 murder, yet his political legacy remains meagre. The Grassroots Democratic Party that Kem Ley was involved in setting up com…

    Astrid Norén-Nilsson, Kheang Un•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues in…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Cambodia's Second Kingdom is an exploration of the role of nationalist imaginings, discourses, and narratives in Cambodia since the 1993 reintroduction of a multiparty democratic system. Competing nationalistic imaginings are shown to be a more prominent part of party political contestation in the Kingdom of Cambodia than typically believed. For political parties, nationalistic imaginings became the basis for strategies to attract popular support…

    Astrid Norén-Nilsson•ARTICLE•Pacific Affairs•2016•Cited by: 7

In the Cambodian national elections in 2013, the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) experienced a strong surge in support, finishing a close second to the long-incumbent Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). Whilst the CNRP campaigned on an anti-money politics, rights-based agenda, the CPP has relied on gift-giving practices to maintain links with voters. This article explores changing popular conceptions of provision to assess to what ex…

  • Performance as (re)incarnation: The Sdech Kân narrative

    Open Access•Astrid Norén-Nilsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 5

A narrative sponsored by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen posits the prime minister as the reincarnation of sixteenth-century king Sdech Kân, a commoner who toppled the king at the time and ascended the throne. Whilst reincarnation narratives have wider Southeast Asian resonances, the reinvention of Sdech Kân is central to the redrawing of boundaries of power between a politically weakened monarchy and the Cambodian People's Party-led government.…
