  • Variation in second-grade reading in children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing

Open Access•Sascha Couvee, Loes Wauters et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2025

We investigated relations between kindergarten precursors and second-grade reading skills in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, and aimed to identify subgroups based on reading skills, in order to explore early signs of later reading delays. DHH children (n = 23, Mage kindergarten = 6.25) participated from kindergarten-second grade. They were tested on phonological awareness, letter knowledge, spoken vocabulary, speechreading, fingerspellin…

  • Implicit Learning of Prepositions in Dutch Kindergartners with and without Developmental Language Disorder

Open Access•Imme Lammertink, Eliane Segers et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning and Development•2024

It has been proposed that an implicit learning deficit explains the difficulties with grammar commonly observed in children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The present study further investigates this link in two ways. Firstly, we investigate whether kindergartners with DLD have more difficulties with preposition understanding and production as compared to their typically developing peers because they have not (yet) learned to weigh im…

  • Predicting Early Literacy

Open Access•Sascha Couvee, Loes Wauters et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2022

The current study investigated the relative contributions of auditory speech decoding (i.e., auditory discrimination) and visual speech decoding (i.e., speechreading) on phonological awareness and letter knowledge in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) kindergartners (Mage = 6;4, n = 27) and hearing kindergartners (Mage = 5;10, n = 42). Hearing children scored higher on auditory discrimination and phonological awareness, with the DHH children scoring …

  • Simple View of Reading in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Adults

Open Access•Loes Wauters, Hille van Gelder et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2021

The present study investigated the relative contribution of the two components in the simple view of reading to the reading comprehension skills of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) adults in the Netherlands. Eighty DHH adults, aged between 30 and 80 years old, were tested on word reading, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Regression analyses showed that both decoding skills and vocabulary contributed to the reading comprehensi…

  • It Takes Two to Read

Open Access•Emile Dirks, Loes Wauters•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2018

Interactive storybook reading is an important activity to enhance the emergent literacy skills of young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. Parents have a crucial role to play in promoting their children's literacy development. However, parents often do not read in an interactive way; therefore guidance is recommended in applying these interactive reading strategies. In the present study we examined how parent reading behavior was affected b…

  • Interactive Reading with Young Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children in eBooks Versus Print Books

Loes Wauters, Emile Dirks•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2017

Interactive storybook reading is effective in enhancing deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children's emergent literacy skills. The current digital era gives parents more opportunities to read books with their child. From an early age on, interaction between parent and child during literacy activities is very important for the development of emergent literacy skills. The purpose of the present study was to explore the opportunities of eBooks on a tab…

  • Mode of Acquisition as a Factor in Deaf Children's Reading Comprehension

Loes Wauters, L N Wauters et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2008

This article examines the role of mode of acquisition (MoA) of word meanings in reading comprehension: children acquire word meanings using perceptual information (e.g., hearing, seeing, or smelling the referent) and/or linguistic information (e.g., verbal explanations). A total of 72 deaf and 99 hearing children between 7 and 15 years of age performed a self-paced reading task. Comprehension scores increased with age in both groups, but reading …

  • Social Integration of Deaf Children in Inclusive Settings

Loes Wauters, L N Wauters et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2007

This article examines social integration of deaf children in inclusive settings in The Netherlands. Eighteen Grade 1-5 deaf children and their 344 hearing classmates completed 2 sociometric tasks, peer ratings and peer nomination, to measure peer acceptance, social competence, and friendship relations. Deaf and hearing children were found to be similar in their peer acceptance and friendship relations, but differences occurred in social competenc…
