Sociolinguists against the AI hype? AI tools in sociolinguistics scholarship
This paper examines sociolinguists’ views of and engagement with artificial intelligence technology in sociolinguistics scholarship, an area that has received little systematic attention to date. Drawing on a global survey of 274 respondents, the study reveals that while automatization and AI tools are mainly used for efficiency and experimentation purposes, their adoption for data collection and analysis remains limited. Moreover, sociolinguists…
The politics of abstentionism: Comparing Sinn Féin’s Westminster abstentionism to the Basque Nationalist Left’s engagement with the Spanish Parliament, 1979–2025
Irish Republicans and the Basque Nationalist Left have been close allies throughout conflict and peace. One previous commonality was that their left-wing political wings Sinn Féin and Batasuna refused to participate in the British or Spanish parliament. For over a century, Sinn Féin has abstained from Westminster. In contrast, a new Basque left group Euskal Herria Bildu (EH Bildu) decided to consistently take their seats in Madrid. Utilising vari…
It’s no longer “that black woman”; it’s “that woman”’: Language in the dynamics of vulnerability and resilience
This article aims to explore the interplay between language, vulnerability and resilience. More concretely, it examines the ways in which being subject to language-related vulnerability in interactions with the public shapes the agency of politicians of migrant origin in Ireland. Using a theoretical approach that sees vulnerability and resilience as dynamically related, the article analyses data from interviews with two local politicians of migra…
Language and trust: Struggles for recognition of migrant people in the political realm
This article explores the influence of language on the political participation of people who have migrated. It examines the ways in which language-related features shape the recognition and trust-building processes for migrant individuals during their engagement with the public in local-level political elections in Ireland. Adopting a relational approach to the concepts of political recognition and trust, the article examines data from interviews…
Language in the age of AI technology: From human to non-human authenticity, from public governance to privatised assemblages
Large language models based on machine-learning technologies are reshaping linguistic contexts and understandings of language. We explore these reconfigurations by investigating discursive positionings of traditional institutional guardians of power in language in response to these changes. Focusing on the discourse of the Real Academia Española (RAE), we show how RAE's social functions, ways of asserting authority, and the nature, function, and …

In pursuit of epistemic authority in public intellectual engagement: The case of language and gender
Public intellectual life is an area of inquiry that has not received a great deal of attention within the field of sociolinguistics. This article investigates the performative dimension of public intellectual engagement in the area of language and gender and, more specifically, how epistemic authority about gender-neutral language is constructed in public intellectual contributions in Catalonia, Spain. Adopting Arendt’s notion of truth claim and …
Ideas, power and agency: Policy actors and the formulation of language-in-education policy for multilingualism
The processes of formulation of language policies have not been researched thoroughly. This paper aims to explore the relationship between ideas, power and agency in language policy-making and specifically with reference to the formulation of language-in-education policy for multilingualism in Ireland. Through an argumentative approach to language policy and using a discursive institutionalist framework, the paper examines data from policy docume…

(Im)possible change: Criticality and constraints in the infrastructures of the academic knowledge economy
This article examines three sets of infrastructures that give shape to the academic knowledge economy, namely: institutional infrastructures (universities and conferences); gate-keeping infrastructures (journals and publishers); and validation infrastructures (competitive assessments of individuals and institutions). We analyse the tensed interplay between critical perspectives in applied linguistics and the influence of academic neoliberalism. W…
Language and culture wars: The far right’s struggle against gender-neutral language
The far right has launched its own particular crusade against gender-neutral language (GNL). In this article, I examine how the parties Rassemblement National, in France, and Vox, in Spain, instrumentalise discursively their opposition to GNL as part of their overall political strategy of confronting social change. By using a culture war framework, I critically analyse the connections between the polarised representations of language and those of…
Sociolinguists and their publics: Epistemological tension and disciplinary contestation over language in Catalonia
This article aims to investigate the relationship of sociolinguists with the publics in Catalonia and to disentangle the complex interrelationships among academics within the discipline. By examining material from mainstream media outlets and data from interviews with a selected number of sociolinguist scholars, we show how the public sphere is a site in which competing epistemological and disciplinary visions contest for discursive dominance in …
Participation and deliberation in language policy: The case of gender-neutral language
This paper investigates language policy formation through participatory and deliberative methods and, more concretely, the regulation of gender-neutral language in Barcelona City Council (Spain). Through an argumentative approach to policy, the paper examines a specific language policy idea, process and solution, and the accompanying discursive argumentation used by decision-makers. The paper (a) shows that linguistic preconceptions and power rel…
The politics of plurilingualism: Immersion, translanguaging, and school autonomy in Catalonia
This paper aims to investigate the politics of plurilingualism in education and, more concretely, the various interests at play behind the introduction of innovations by education authorities in Catalonia, Spain. To do this, the paper critically examines the linguistic model of language in education and the public debate that its introduction generated, focusing on three themes: immersion, translanguaging, and school autonomy. The model, which ac…
Language rights and groups of immigrant origin: The case of language claimsin the Spanish cities in North Africa
In this article, I aim to analyse language rights in relation to groups of immigrant origin. Liberal democracies are reluctant to consider immigrant groups as subjects entitled to the same set of language and cultural rights enjoyed by national minorities. However, the trend towards increasing levels of immigration is configuring new cultural and language correlations within territorial boundaries that provoke responses that problematise a fixed …
Medium of instruction ideologies: Accommodation of multilingualism in the bilingual regime of Navarre
The management of bilingualism in the Spanish autonomous community of Navarre is a source of tension. The implementation of English medium of instruction in the public educational system has clashed with attempts to break with the linguistic territoriality regime by promoting Basque schooling. This paper brings together ideologies on English and minority languages and explores how political practice is intertwined with language policy and plannin…
