The Architecture of Object-Based Attention
Critical Design Features of Pre-Service Education Programs to Enhance Teacher Capacity to Effectively Work in Schools With Indigenous Students
For more than 3 decades governments and education systems have struggled to address the gaps in educational outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Over the past 10 years it has become increasingly apparent that central to redressing these gaps is the development of teachers who are able to effectively engage with Indigenous students, their families and communities. The introduction of National Professional Standards has increase…
Diagnosis of Hyperactivity Disorder in Gifted Children Depends on Observational Sources
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is often reported in gifted children. Several authors, however, suggest that gifted children, in fact display AD/HD-like behaviors, especially at school due to boredom resulting from academically understimulating environments. In order to clarify this issue, a study was conducted on 37 gifted children based on four different observational assessments of hyperactivity disorder (father, mother, teach…
The Capacity of Visual Short-Term Memory is Set Both by Visual Information Load and by Number of Objects
Previous research has suggested that visual short-term memory has a fixed capacity of about four objects. However, we found that capacity varied substantially across the five stimulus classes we examined, ranging from 1.6 for shaded cubes to 4.4 for colors (estimated using a change detection task). We also estimated the information load per item in each class, using visual search rate. The changes we measured in memory capacity across classes wer…
A jitter after-effect reveals motion-based stabilization of vision
A shaky hand holding a video camera invariably turns a treasured moment into an annoying, jittery momento. More recent consumer cameras thoughtfully offer stabilization mechanisms to compensate for our unsteady grip. Our eyes face a similar challenge in that they are constantly making small movements even when we try to maintain a fixed gaze. What should be substantial, distracting jitter passes completely unseen. Position changes from large eye …
The secondary circular reaction and response elicitation in the operant learning of 6-month-old infants
A note in support of Tyler on elitism
