Comparing Generative AI-Supported Instruction and Strategic Dictionary Use in Upper Elementary Students’ Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Development
This study compares the effectiveness of Generative AI-supported instruction and strategic dictionary use on upper elementary students’ receptive and expressive vocabulary development. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design was employed with 136 students aged 10–12, including monolingual and bilingual learners, who were assigned to three conditions: Generative AI-supported instruction, strategic dictionary use, and a control group. Receptiv…
Investigating Grammatical Aspect Choices in Oral Narratives of Greek Heritage Speakers
This study investigates grammatical aspect in Greek and English oral narratives produced by Greek heritage speakers in the United States, examining aspectual marking across the bilingual repertoire, patterns of cross-linguistic alignment, and morphological restructuring. Using 31 narratives from the Greek Heritage Language Corpus, the analysis addressed (a) the role of background variables, (b) default aspectual preferences, (c) cross-linguistic …
Strengthening Heritage Greek Vitality in the United States through a Community-Based Curriculum
Sustainability of Greek as a heritage language in the United States is at stake at present due to the low rates of intergenerational transmission among its speakers, declining immigration from Greece and Cyprus, shortage of specialized teachers, lack of instructional time, old-fashioned teaching methods, and limited opportunities for using the language. This paper builds on the Capacity Development, Opportunity Creation, and Desire ( COD ) framew…
Tangible insights on the strategizing of language learners and users
This article presents reflections from 12 experts on language learners strategy (LLS) research. They were asked to offer their reflections in one of their domains of expertise, linking research into LLS with successful language learning and use practices. In essence, they were called upon to provide a review of recent scholarship by identifying areas where results of research had already led to the enhancement of learner strategy use, as well as …
Situating Language Learning Strategy Use
The effect of gender and educational level on dictionary use strategies adopted by upper-elementary and lower-secondary students attending Greek Schools1
The aim of the present large-scale study is to elaborate on the concept of ‘Dictionary Use Strategy’ (DUS), to investigate the effect of gender and educational level on DUSs adopted by upper elementary and lower secondary students in Greek mainstream schools, and to determine the strategic profile of the sample by using a standardized instrument of data collection. The sample consisted of 745 upper elementary and lower secondary pupils in Greek m…

Exploring language learning strategy transfer between Greek L2 and English FL in case of early adolescent multilinguals
This study compares language learning strategy (LLS) use between Greek L2 and English FL and a possible variation in the frequency and type of LLSs employed in the two languages in order to depict the strategic profiles of the multilingual learners aged 12–15 (n = 307). It also observes the effect of gender in relation to a second vs. foreign language context. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) is used to measure the frequency of…
NN Combinations in Greek
In this paper, multiword NN combinations in Greek are explored within the framework of construction morphology (Booij 2009, 2010a, 2010b). I understand NN combinations as multiword sequences constructed by two inflected words, such as: arxitéktonas-arxeoló γ os ‘architect-archeologist’; taksí δ i-astrapí lit. ‘trip-lightning’, thus ‘very fast and sudden trip’; sáltsa manitárja lit. ‘sauce mushrooms’, thus ‘mushroom sauce’. I use the classificatio…
