Question-answering processes in reading multiple texts in a second language
We studied Japanese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ cognitive processes when reading two texts and answering intratext or intertext questions, a format that demands attention toward discrete pieces of information across texts. In Experiment 1, 38 Japanese undergraduate and graduate students read 16 pairs of short texts and answered comprehension questions with four options each. Their eye movements were recorded, which was followed …
Can online interactions reduce loneliness in young adults during university closures in Japan? The directed acyclic graphs approach
As a countermeasure to the increased loneliness induced by the COVID‐19 pandemic‐related university closures, universities provided students with online interaction opportunities. However, whether these opportunities contributed to reducing loneliness during the university closures remains unclear, as previous studies have produced contradictory findings. We conducted a nationwide cross‐sectional survey. Data were collected on demographics, socia…
Robust evidence for the simple view of second language reading
This paper reports a complete secondary analysis of Jeon and Yamashita’s (2022) systematic review to build the second language (L2) model of the simple view of reading (SVR). The same meta-analytic methodologies were maintained, with the exception of applying meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM). This study successfully replicated some of the aggregated correlations but not others, owing to (a) the recoding of the original raw data …
Shift‐and‐Persist Strategy
Low socioeconomic status has various adverse effects on health, which can be mitigated through the shift‐and‐persist (S‐P) strategy. Studies have focused on how this strategy can affect health in the face of adversity. However, that children learn this strategy from positive role models, such as parents, is an unexamined precondition of the theory. This study presents one bit of supporting evidence for this precondition by examining the similarit…
How do Changes in One's Self‐Esteem Affect the Self‐Esteem of Others
When someone's self‐esteem is raised, how does their presence affect the people surrounding them? The purpose of the present study was to provide initial evidence for this question from the viewpoint of social comparison. We therefore conducted a questionnaire experiment among junior high school students ( N = 225) using a scene‐assumption method, investigating the effect of a change in the self‐esteem of a specific individual on the self‐esteem …
The Role of Individual Factors in Friendship Formation
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of four individual factors (shyness, self‐esteem, social skills, and defensive pessimism) on the formation of friendships among undergraduate students. Freshmen ( N = 93) completed a questionnaire assessing their shyness, self‐esteem, social skills, and level of defensive pessimism. Then, they answered questions about interpersonal indices (number of friends, satisfaction with friendships, thei…
