Effect of Biomass Fuel Use on Neonatal Outcomes
Background: Exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP), including particulate matter of size 2.5 μm/m 3 (PM 2.5 ) and carbon monoxide (CO) resulting from the combustion of biomass fuels in homes, is an important risk factor associated with growth and developmental delays in neonates. We investigated the association between exposure to HAP and adverse birth outcomes in a birth cohort study of 594 pregnant females in Sri Lanka. Methods : Pregnant femal…
Evaluation of Respirable Crystalline Silica in High School Ceramics Classrooms
Air concentrations of respirable crystalline silica were measured in eleven (11) high school ceramics classrooms located in Salt Lake County, UT, USA. Respirable dust was collected on PVC filters using precision flow pumps and cyclone samplers (n = 44). Filters were subsequently analyzed for respirable dust and percent crystalline silica content. The geometric mean of the silica concentrations was 0.009 mg/m3 near the teacher's work station and 0…
Determinants of low birth weight in urban Pakistan
Objective To identify determinants of low birth weight (LBW) in Karachi, Pakistan, including environmental exposures and nutritional status of the mother during pregnancy. Design Cross-sectional study. Participants Five hundred and forty mother–infant pairs. We interviewed mothers about obstetric history, diet and exposure to Pb. We measured birth weight and blood lead level (BLL). We performed multiple log binomial regression analysis to identif…
