  • Does the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence ( JST ‐ IC ) Predict Mortality? Findings From the Sonic Study

Open Access•Yukie Masui, Yuko Yoshida et al.•ARTICLE•Geriatrics and gerontology…•2026

A higher Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) score-an index of higher-level functional ability among older Japanese adults-was associated with a lower long-term risk of all-cause mortality, with significant associations observed across all age groups and among those in their 80s, but not among those in their 70s.

  • Longitudinal Association Between the Carotid Intima‐Media Thickness and Sarcopenia in an Older Japanese Population

Open Access•Ken Terashima, Hiroshi Akasaka et al.•ARTICLE•Geriatrics and gerontology…•2026

  • Association of fish intake with all-cause mortality according to CRP levels or inflammation in older adults

Open Access•Hideaki Kurata, Shu Meguro et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

  • Early- to late-life environmental factors and late-life global cognition in septuagenarian and octogenarians

Open Access•Yoshiko Ishioka, Yoshiko Lily Ishioka et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

This study aimed to evaluate cognitively stimulating environments throughout life and to examine direct and indirect associations between these environments and late-life cognition. Early-life education, three domains of work complexity (data, people, and things) based on the longest-held occupation, and engagement in late-life leisure activities (LAs) were assessed. A structural equation model was developed using cross-sectional data of 1721 Jap…

  • Relationship between dietary patterns and physical performance in the very old population

Open Access•Tao Yu, Yuko Oguma et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2023

Objectives: As the world’s population is ageing, improving the physical performance (PP) of the older population is becoming important. Although diets are fundamental to maintaining and improving PP, few studies have addressed the role of these factors in adults aged ≥ 85 years, and none have been conducted in Asia. This study aimed to determine the dietary patterns (DP) and examine their relationship with PP in this population. Design: This cros…

  • The impact pathways of environmental, social, and behavioural factors on healthy ageing for urban dwellers aged 85

Open Access•Natsuko Yoshida, Yasumichi Arai et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

In the context of global population ageing and concentration in cities, the population aged 80 and over (80+) is growing rapidly. Japan has the fastest ageing population and longest healthy average life expectancy, while health decline becomes pronounced and care needs increase in the 85+ age group post the 'average life expectancy'. The healthy ageing of older urban community dwellers is a pressing issue in world initiatives for sustainable urba…

  • Construct Validity of a New Health Assessment Questionnaire for the National Screening Program of Older Adults in Japan

Open Access•Tatsuro Ishizaki, Yukie Masui et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The Japanese government has implemented a new screening program to promote measures to avoid worsening lifestyle-related diseases and frailty among the older population. In this effort, the government formulated a new health assessment questionnaire for the screening program of old-old adults aged ≥75 years. The questionnaire comprises 15 items, of which 12 address frailty, two address general health status, and one addresses smoking habits. This…

  • Relative validity of brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire among very old Japanese aged 80 years or older

Open Access•Satomi Kobayashi, Xiaoyi Yuan et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2019

Objective Dietary questionnaires for assessing dietary intakes among populations of individuals aged 80 years or older (the very old) are very limited. We examined the relative validity of forty-three nutrients and twenty-seven food groups estimated by a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ) targeting very old Japanese, using semi-weighed dietary records (DR) as a reference. Design Between June and August 2012 and between…
