  • Comparison of Ensemble Machine Learning Methods for Soil Erosion Pin Measurements

Open Access•Kieu Anh Nguyen, Walter Chen et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Although machine learning has been extensively used in various fields, it has only recently been applied to soil erosion pin modeling. To improve upon previous methods of quantifying soil erosion based on erosion pin measurements, this study explored the possible application of ensemble machine learning algorithms to the Shihmen Reservoir watershed in northern Taiwan. Three categories of ensemble methods were considered in this study: (a) Bagging…

  • DEM- and GIS-Based Analysis of Soil Erosion Depth Using Machine Learning

Open Access•Kieu Anh Nguyen, Walter Chen•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Soil erosion is a form of land degradation. It is the process of moving surface soil with the action of external forces such as wind or water. Tillage also causes soil erosion. As outlined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) #15, it is a global challenge to “combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.” In order to advance this goal, we studied and modeled the soil erosion depth…

  • Determining Cover Management Factor with Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis for Improving Long-Term Soil Loss Estimation in Watersheds

Open Access•Fuan Tsai, Jhe-Syuan Lai et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

The universal soil loss equation (USLE) is a widely used empirical model for estimating soil loss. Among the USLE model factors, the cover management factor (C-factor) is a critical factor that substantially impacts the estimation result. Assigning C-factor values according to a land-use/land-cover (LULC) map from field surveys is a typical traditional approach. However, this approach may have limitations caused by the difficulty and cost in cond…

  • Rural and Urban Married Asian Immigrants in Taiwan

Open Access•Walter Chen, Wen-Been Shiao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2012

  • The relationship of high sensitivity C-reactive protein to percent body fat mass, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist circumference in a Taiwanese population

    Open Access•C C Lin, Cheng-Chieh Lin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

Our study demonstrates that %FM is the only obesity indicator that is strongly associated with a high level of hs-CRP after adjusting for sociodemographic factors, lifestyle behaviors and components of metabolic syndrome in both genders in a Taiwanese population aged forty years and over. In men, %FM had the greatest ability to classify subjects with a high level of hs-CRP when only demographic and lifestyle behaviors were considered. Our study f…

  • The relation of metabolic syndrome according to five definitions to cardiovascular risk factors - a population-based study

    Open Access•C C Lin, Cheng-Chieh Lin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

The associations of these five definitions with cardiovascular risk factors were similar in women, and it was evident that the five definitions performed better in women than in men, with higher ORs observed in relation to arterial stiffness, elevated hs-CRP, and higher Framingham risk scores

  • Association between betel-nut chewing and chronic kidney disease in men

    Open Access•Che-Yi Chou, Che‐yi Chou et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2009

Background Betel-nut use is associated with metabolic syndrome and obesity. However, the association between betel-nut chewing and risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unknown. The present study was conducted to determine the association between betel-nut chewing and CKD in men. Methods We retrospectively reviewed health-check records of 3264 men in a hospital-based cross-sectional screening programme from 2003 to 2006. CKD was defined as est…
