  • Therapeutic change and the emergence of common ground over interactional history

Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Alexandra Gubina•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2026

This article explores the interactional history of talk about a topic that emerges as the patient’s key problem over a series of psychotherapy sessions. Drawing on a complete series of 25 video-recordings of a psychodynamic psychotherapy spanning over six months, we analyze how common ground between therapist and patient concerning the patient’s aging process develops. The study shows how common ground emerges step by step, yet remains largely op…

  • An interactional history of categorization and reference to an embodied action: How changing references are used to develop the referent itself in a series of theater rehearsals

Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Axel Schmidt•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2026

In theater rehearsals, participants cooperate in order to create a stable performance. We report on changes in the choice of expressions that members of a theater crew use for referring to an embodied figure across 44 rehearsals of a single scene in which the figure occurs. We show how lexical changes over the interactional history are tied both to the emergence of common ground and to reconceptualizations of the referent. Participants change exp…

  • Interactional histories: Introduction to a special issue

Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Pentti Haddington•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2026

Conversation analysis has traditionally focused on the development of interaction order within sequences of social interaction. Expanding this temporal perspective, this special issue explores interactional histories that unfold across multiple interactional events, ranging from several minutes to several years. This introduction presents a theoretical framework for understanding interactional histories, locating them within the temporality of so…

  • On action type labels: Can enactments in theater rehearsals be understood as proposals

Open Access•Axel Schmidt, Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2026

Actions are usually described as generic types by drawing on context-free criteria such as who benefits or performs the actions. Dealing with a specific type of action tied to the setting in which it occurs—that is, actors’ enactments in theater rehearsals—we argue that action labels sometimes must be conceptualized in more setting-specific ways, including factors such as participation framework, division of labor, activity types, and practical t…

  • Action categorization in Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics: Challenges and perspectives

Arnulf Deppermann, Alexandra Gubina•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2026

This introduction to the special issue on action categorization revisits the state of the art, discusses challenges and competing views, and considers future developments in the study of action in social interaction. After reviewing shortly speech act theory, (neo-)Gricean pragmatics, and conversation analysis as approaches to action categorization, it discusses the relationship between action formation and action ascription in interaction vs. th…

  • On the “next-turn proof procedure” in the analysis of social interaction: Trouble formulations in the context of practical activities

Open Access•Alexandra Gubina, Arnulf Deppermann et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2026

Recipients’ understanding of speakers’ actions typically becomes publicly available through their responses, making the next-turn proof procedure central for the analysis of social interaction. However, little is known about how to methodologically warrant the analysis of actions with minimal or no response. This is particularly evident in case of trouble formulations. We examine trouble formulations in the context of practical activities, produc…

  • Coding actions in social interaction: Potentials and problems

Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Alexandra Gubina•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2025•References: 20

This paper deals with one object of coding that is particularly troublesome, the coding of actions. We argue that action-coding within the framework of Conversation Analysis (CA) necessarily leads to problems due to an inherent tension between criteria for good coding schemes and the properties of action in social interaction. While coding schemes require clear definitions of codes, their mutual exclusivity, irreversibility, comprehensiveness and…

  • From recordings to codes: Approaches to the study of social interaction and relationships to theory

    T Stivers, Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2025•References: 19

Conversation analysis’ inductive qualitative approach consistently relies on contrastive patterns across collections of cases making the data amenable to hypothesis generation about inter-relationships among practices as well as relationships between practices and exogenous variables. But how can this quantification be done in ways that do not return us to a Balesian version of coding that disregards CA principles? CA-grounded coding should be de…

  • When and how patients' self-claims are challenged in psychotherapy

    Open Access•Anssi Peräkylä, L Voutilainen et al.•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 36

The article describes the practices through which patients' self-presentations are challenged in psychotherapy. Based on the analysis of thirty-eight instances from psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, analyzed with methods of conversation analysis, narrative analysis, and coding, this article reports on how therapists challenge patients' self-conceptualizations in response to patients' self-presentations. Challenges mostly follow pati…

  • Doing More than Confirming: Expanded Responses to Requests for Confirmation in German Talk-in-Interaction

Open Access•Alexandra Gubina, Elisabeth Betz et al.•ARTICLE•Contrastive Pragmatics•2024

While requests for confirmation (RfCs) make a yes/no-response relevant, recipients often produce more than a mere confirmation. Our paper explores expanded responses to RfCs in German talk-in-interaction. We focus on responses consisting of a confirmation and an additional TCU /action. Drawing on video data from mundane and institutional settings, we demonstrate how expanded responses are designed and fit the sequential environments in which they…

  • Request for confirmation sequences in German

Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Alexandra Gubina et al.•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2024

In request for confirmation (RfC) sequences, interlocutors negotiate their social positions regarding access and rights to knowledge. The article presents an overview of a quantitative analysis of 200 RfCs and their responses in German conversations to highlight the relevant linguistic resources speakers of the language deployed to position themselves vis-à-vis a confirmable proposition. In German RfCs, modal particles and tags play an important …

  • Self-translations in multilingual workplace interaction

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Ibrahim Cindark et al.•ARTICLE•Intercultural Pragmatics•2024•References: 16

In multi-lingual workplace interaction involving L2-speakers with different levels of proficiency, L1-speakers can be seen to use self-translation of their own prior contributions as a repair-practice to restore intersubjectivity. This paper shows that self-translations are produced in three environments: (a) in response to repair-initiation by recipients, (b) in response to inadequate or missing responses, (c) after disaffiliative responses in o…

  • Rejecting the validity of inferred attributions of incompetence in German talk-in-interaction

    Open Access•Alexandra Gubina, Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2024•References: 8

This paper deals with pragmatic inference from the perspective of Conversation Analysis. In particular, we examine a specific variety of inferences – the attribution of incompetence which Self constructs on the basis of Other's prior action, hearable as positioning Self as incompetent (e.g., instructions, offers of assistance, advice); this attribution of incompetence concerns Self's execution of some practical task. This inference is indexed in …

  • Showing and telling—How directors combine embodied demonstrations and verbal descriptions to instruct in theater rehearsals

    Open Access•Axel Schmidt, Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2023

In theater as a bodily-spatial art form, much emphasis is placed on the way actors perform movements in space as an important multimodal resource for creating meaning. In theater rehearsals, movements are created in series of directors' instructions and actors' implementations. Directors' instructions on how to conduct a movement often draw on embodied demonstrations in contrast to verbal descriptions. For instance, to instruct an actress to act …

  • Displaying Inner Experience Through Language and Body in Community Theater Rehearsals

    Open Access•Katariina Harjunpää, Arnulf Deppermann et al.•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2023•References: 48

Using multimodal conversation analysis, we investigate how novices learning the “inner body” acting technique in the context of a community theater project share their experiences of the bodily exercises through verbal and embodied conduct. We focus on how verbal description and bodily enactment of the experience mutually elaborate each other, and how the experienced sensorimotor and affective qualities are made to be witnessed and recognized by …

  • On the Emergence of Routines: An Interactional Micro-history of Rehearsing a Scene

    Open Access•Axel Schmidt, Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 46

In workplace settings, skilled participants cooperate on the basis of shared routines in smooth and often implicit ways. Our study shows how interactional histories provide the basis for routine coordination. We draw on theater rehearsals as a perspicuous setting for tracking interactional histories. In theater rehearsals, the process of building performing routines is in focus. Our study builds on collections of consecutive performances of the s…

  • Meta-semantic practices in social interaction: Definitions and specifications provided in response to Was heißt X (‘what does X mean’)

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Interactional Linguistics•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 56

In social interaction, different kinds of word-meaning can become problematic for participants. This study analyzes two meta-semantic practices, definitions and specifications, which are used in response to clarification requests in German implemented by the format Was heißt X (‘What does X mean?’). In the data studied, definitions are used to convey generalizable lexical meanings of mostly technical terms. These terms are either unknown to reque…

  • Meaning in interaction

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Elwys De Stefani•ARTICLE•Interactional Linguistics•2023•References: 61

This editorial to the Special Issue on “Meaning in Interaction” introduces to the approach of Interactional Semantics, which has been developed over the last years within the framework of Interactional Linguistics. It discusses how “meaning” is understood and approached in this framework and lays out that Interactional Semantics is interested in how participants clarify and negotiate the meanings of the expressions that they are using in social i…

  • When the Body Belies the Words: Embodied Agency With darf/kann ich? (“May/Can I?”) in German

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Alexandra Gubina•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2021

Research on multimodal interaction has shown that simultaneity of embodied behavior and talk is constitutive for social action. In this study, we demonstrate different temporal relationships between verbal and embodied actions. We focus on uses of German darf/kann ich? (“may/can I?”) in which speakers initiate, or even complete the embodied action that is addressed by the turn before the recipient's response. We argue that through such embodied c…

  • How Shared Meanings and Uses Emerge Over an Interactional History: Wabi Sabi in a Series of Theater Rehearsals

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Axel Schmidt•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2021•Cited by: 10•References: 18

Taking the use of the esthetic term wabi sabi (Japanese compound noun) in a series of German- and English-language theater rehearsals as an example, this article studies the emergence of shared meanings and uses of an expression over an interactional history. We track how shared understandings and uses of wabi sabi develop over the course of a series of theater rehearsals. We focus on the practices by which understandings of wabi sabi are display…

In this introductory article, we scrutinize the novel insights that can be gained from examining interactional practices over time and discuss the related methodological challenges for longitudinal CA. We first retrace CA’s interest in the temporality of social interaction and then review three lines of current CA work on ch…

  • Micro-Sequential Coordination in Early Responses

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann, Axel Schmidt•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2021•Cited by: 12•References: 43

Our study deals with early bodily responses to directives (requests and instructions, i.e., second pair parts [SPPs]) produced before the first pair part (FPP) is complete. We show how early bodily SPPs build on the properties of an emerging FPP. Our focus is on the successive incremental coordination of components of the FPP with components of the SPP. We show different kinds of micro-sequential relationships between FPP and SPP: successive spec…

This special issue investigates early responses—responsive actions that (start to) unfold while the production of the responded-to turn and action is still under way. Although timing in human conduct has gained intense interest in research, the early production of responsive actions has so far largely remained unexplored. But what makes early responses possible? What do such responses tell us about the complex interplay between syntax, prosody, a…

    Gabriele Lucius-Hoene, Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2000•Cited by: 55

Narrative identity has achieved a scientific status as an elaborate concept of the storied nature of human experience and personal identity. Yet, many questions remain as to its empirical substrate. By exploring the pragmatic aspect of narrative research interviewing, i.e., the performative and positioning aspects of the narrative situation and the narrative product, as well as its particular autoepistemological and communicative tasks, this arti…

    Open Access•Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2018•Cited by: 27•References: 10

Building on a corpus of 70 hours of German driving lessons, this paper studies the use of declaratives vs. imperatives for instruction. It shows how these linguistic resources are adapted to different praxeological, temporal and participant‐related environments. Declaratives are used for first instructions, task‐setting and post‐trial discussions. They exhibit complex syntax and do not call for immediate compliance. Their high degree of explicitn…

  • How to get a grip on identities-in-interaction: (What) Does ‘Positioning’ offer more than ‘Membership Categorization’? Evidence from a mock story

    Arnulf Deppermann•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2013•Cited by: 22•References: 14

This article advocates an understanding of ‘positioning’ as a key to the analysis of identities in interaction within the methodological framework of conversation analysis. Building on research by Bamberg, Georgakopoulou and others, a performative, interaction-based approach to positioning is outlined and compared to membership categorization analysis. An interactional episode involving mock stories to reveal and reproach an inadequate identity-c…

Schegloff (1996) has argued that grammars are “positionally-sensitive”, implying that the situated use and understanding of linguistic formats depends on their sequential position. Analyzing the German format Kannst du X? (corresponding to English Can you X? ) based on 82 instances from a large corpus of talk-in-interaction (FOLK), this paper shows how different action-ascriptions to turns using the same format depend on various orders of context…

  • Narrative Identität als Fallstruktur

    Gabriele Lucius-Hoene, Arnulf Deppermann•CHAPTER•Rekonstruktion Narrativer Identität•2002

    Gabriele Lucius-Hoene, Arnulf Deppermann•CHAPTER•Rekonstruktion Narrativer Identität•2002
