Barriers and opportunities to broader participation in transformative model building for sustainable infrastructure in the Southeastern U.S
The rapidly changing nature of transportation, telecommunications, and energy infrastructure globally, in part a response to climate change, has led to an increased urgency for innovative solutions in sustainable systems. Moreover, the historical environmental injustices within public infrastructure predicate wider participation in drafting new plans, such that past mistakes are not repeated. The methodology for engaging inclusive and integral pa…
Perspectives on taste and odor management in public water systems
Incorporating spatial autocorrelation in dasymetric mapping
The growing demand for spatially detailed population products in various fields continues to rise, as users shift their focus from aggregated areal totals to high-resolution grid estimates. Aggregating demographic data to areas, such as census tracts or block groups, can mask localized heterogeneities within those areas. This paper presents a new pycnophylactic (density-preserving) geospatial model for disaggregating population to high-resolution…
An index of social fabric for assessing community vulnerability to natural hazards
Governing Transition
Global climate change presents both acute and long-term risks to humanity. Managed retreat has emerged in the literature as one method by which to manage some acute and slow-onset events caused by climate change, but it requires substantial additional research and examination. It is now clear that humanity must scrutinize how and where we live and the wisdom of policies that support continued rebuilding and reinvestment after climate-related disa…
Climate justice and home-buyout programs
For most Americans, the value of their home represents the largest portion of their total wealth; accordingly, homeowners even in very poor areas can obtain some benefit from a home-buyout program as a means to move away from risk and begin again. Renters, however, are an overlooked population during implementation of post-disaster retreat programs that predominantly focus on homeownership. Racism is a substantial factor in homeownership disparit…
Quantifying the Benefits of Home Buyouts for Mitigating Flood Damages
Heuristics and Biases
Failures of security technology are often attributed to individual fault. The lack of adoption of privacy enhancing technologies is explained as a societal failure, i.e., that people don't care. Security designers consider the individual user to be rational, certain, and self-optimizing. Thus, academic and practitioner efforts have focused on incentive alignment and education. But even the effectiveness of initiatives such as security education c…
Inland waterway resource and spill management needs in Southeastern USA
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the issues faced by managers of inland waterways in the Southeastern USA as a guide for improvements to spill management information systems.
