  • Low-Bridging the Leader: Keith Davey and the Return of Pierre Trudeau, 1979–80

    Open Access•Ryan Hamilton•ARTICLE•Canadian Historical Review•2025

Pierre Trudeau’s victory in the 1980 election saw him returned to power and ready to undertake an ambitious agenda, including the establishment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which continues to shape Canada. Yet Trudeau had been defeated a year prior and was on his way out of politics, seemingly for good. This article explores that rapid turnaround through the work of Keith Davey, a Liberal Party strategist who helped convince Tr…

  • When Is Hilo Low? Price Image Formation Based on Frequency versus Depth Pricing Strategies

Open Access•Daniel Sheehan, Ryan Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2022•References: 26

One of the prominent pricing decisions a retailer can make is its choice of pricing strategy. Previous research investigating consumers’ responses to stores with frequent, shallow price advantages relative to competitors (a frequency strategy) versus stores with infrequent, deep price advantages (a depth strategy) was all conducted by allowing people to simultaneously view prices from multiple stores, a setting that emphasized across-store compar…

  • Are We There Yet? An Anticipation Account of the Return Trip Effect

Open Access•Zoey Chen, Ryan Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2021

Research has documented the psychological phenomenon in which the trip back from a destination is experienced as shorter than the trip to the destination. Deemed the “return trip effect” (RTE), prior work explained this phenomenon in terms of differential familiarity between home and outbound destination or an underestimation of initial travel time. The present article posits an anticipation account for the RTE: Outbound trips to a destination te…

  • The Hahnemann University Hospital Closure and What Matters: A Department Chair’s Perspective

    Ryan Hamilton, Richard J Hamilton•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2020

The closure of Hahnemann University Hospital, which was announced on June 26, 2019, resulted in the most significant graduate medical education displacement in history, sending over 550 residents to new institutions within a month of the announcement. Over 2,000 physicians, nurses, and staff lost their jobs. While seemingly predictable in retrospect, the closure came as a cataclysmic event to all involved. In this Invited Commentary, a department…

  • The case for using exemplars to develop academic self-efficacy

Helen Dixon, Eleanor Hawe et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2020

Academic self-efficacy is critical to academic success. Hence those working in higher education need to make deliberate and substantial attempts to foster academic competence, confidence, persistence and resilience in the students they teach, given they are essential components of academic self-efficacy. Addressing an identified gap in the exemplars literature, this article pays particular attention to how exemplars can be used in an embedded and…

  • A modified Delphi study on research priorities in cancer, gender and the arts

Chad Hammond, Roanne Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Arts and Health•2018

Men and women diagnosed with cancer may encounter complex changes to gendered roles and expectations within the work environment, families and the community. Creative interventions using the arts could address some of these challenges using person-centred approaches that attend to gender disruptions and negotiations. To identify current research gaps and future priorities in this field, a national expert panel was assembled of seventeen professio…

    Open Access•Ryan Hamilton, Roanne Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2018•References: 4

Secondary lymphedema is a chronic condition that can develop after the treatment of cancer and can often lead to negative psychological and social impairments. When dealing with chronic illness, hoping and coping are interdependent. Previous research has assessed the outcomes of workshops designed to enhance hope but has not examined the workshop itself to determine how those outcomes were achieved. This study deconstructs the Living Hopefully wi…

  • We'll Be Honest, This Won't Be the Best Article You'll Ever Read: The Use of Dispreferred Markers in Word-of-Mouth Communication

Ryan Hamilton, Kathleen D Vohs et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 38

Consumers value word-of-mouth communications in large part because customer reviews are more likely to include negative information about a product or service than are communications originating from the marketer. Despite the fact that negative information is frequently valued by those receiving it, baldly declaring negative information may come with social costs to both communicator and receiver. For this reason, communicators sometimes soften p…

  • The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology as Moral Science

    Open Access•Ryan Hamilton, Richard Paul Hamilton•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Evolutionary psychology speaks to a common intuition that the biology of the human animal will elucidate human beastliness. In this article I argue that, regardless of whether that intuition is correct, evolutionary psychology fails as an explanation of human action. It fails because, in attempting to replace our everyday moral vocabulary with a mechanical one, it loses sight of the constitutive role of norms in human conduct. In thus disregardin…

  • Perceptual Focus Effects in Choice

Ryan Hamilton, Jiewen Hong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 29

This article examines consumer choice as a function of the perceptual similarity of the options in the decision set. In particular, we examine a scenario in which a set of options is extended by adding alternatives that change its perceptual characteristics, increasing the salience of one of the options in the core set. In this context, we document that, contrary to normative predictions, perceptual focus can increase the choice share of one of t…

Background: The Material Appropriate Processing (MAP) framework suggests that the influence of a text adjunct on the learning and transfer of textual information will be moderated by the overlap between type of processing induced by the adjunct and by the organisation of the text. The two types of processing are item specific processing and relational processing. Although complementary types of processing have been found to produce superior conce…

  • The Context of Ancient Drama

    Ryan Hamilton, Richard Hamilton•REVIEW•Phoenix•1996

Ancient theater has always caught contemporary interest, despite the eclectic nature of the surviving evidence. Tourists wander the remains of buildings at Epidauros and Athens, and generations of people have pondered Medea and Oedipus, yet it can be surprisingly difficult to find reliable, accessible information on these plays and their theaters. The Context of Ancient Drama remedies this situation. It provides, in modern English translation, do…

  • Comic Acts

    Open Access•Ryan Hamilton, Richard Hamilton•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•1991•Cited by: 16•References: 1

    A. H. Sommerstein has recently directed our attention away from the belaboured topic of the essential and original structure of Old Comedy to the more productive question of how the extant plays of Aristophanes are shaped. He begins with the question of the source of ‘the five-act principle, standard in Menandrian comedy’ (140). Correctly looking to the chorus as the key element in articulating a play's form, Sommerstein finds that the five-act f…

Criticism of scene is widespread but hardly consistent. Duchemin found it remarquablement r6duit and …
